The name State College comes from the fact that it was one of thirteen colleges and universities founded in 1795 by President George Washington as part of his new University System. The college campus is located on 202 acres at the confluence of the Susquehanna River and called "The Meadows". State College was founded on land that was donated by Colonel James Lancaster. The original buildings were erected between 1779-1785 on what is now Easton Road near wherepresent-day Penn's Landing would be located. At first, there were only 14 students and one faculty member at State College. However, enrollment soon grew to over 300 students with an additional 50 faculty members. In 1827, State College merged with Lehigh University, becoming one of the most prestigious universities in Pennsylvania. Over time, StateCollege changed its name several times (the most notable being "Pennsylvania Agricultural and Mechanical Institute" from 1892 until 1914). In 1915, it again changed its name to "State College of Pennsylvania". In 1933 it was renamed "State University ofPA" after Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt's proposal to create national universities throughout America based upon his vision for universities that would promote American democracy and improve education opportunities for all Americans.
