The first settlers in what would become St. Marys were French Catholics who arrived in 1753 from Quebec City. They founded a small Catholic mission on the banks of the Monongahela River and named it after Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Mary). In 1821, as part of the 1830 eastern seceding United States, St.Marys became a part of the newly formed Allegheny County. It was platted in 1827 and named for its patron saint: Saint Mary of Peace and Charity (Marianne). In 1837, one John Auld moved to what would become St. Marys with his family from Sandusky Township in Butler County, Ohio and started a gristmill that became one of the largest mills in southwestern Pennsylvania; it still operates today as Auld’s Mill & Gristmill Museum Inc., located at 501 North Second Street in St.Marys.). Auld also built a church on his property which served as both his home and church until 1840 when he donated it to the parish for use as an elementary school which eventually became Holy Cross Roman Catholic School District No 915 (now Alleghany-Jefferson Consolidated School District # 915) aprticularly because then-Pope Francis visited Allegheny County during Lent 1984/85 while Bishop Foley officiated at Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish Church adjacent to Holy Cross Roman Catholic School District No 915.) On February 14, 1840, Pennsylvania acquired all of eastern Northumberland County from Virginia pursuant to this recommendation. As part of this acquisition, Saint Marys became part of Pennsylvania and remained so until 1988 when it attained full independence from bothPennsylvania and Delaware (the only other county within Pennsylvania). Today, Saint Marys is one of the most populated townships within Pennsylvanian borders with over 40% population growth since 1990 according to Census figures released last year. It has experienced significant gentrification over that time with many homes being replaced with more modern structures such as schools and businesses which have helped contribute to its current community development pattern which emphasizes social inclusion through economic opportunity-based redevelopment plans (EODPs).
