In 1781, a group of Catholic colonists from Pennsylvania settled in what is now St. Marys County, Pennsylvania. The first European settlers in what is now St. Marys, Pennsylvania arrived in the 17th century. One of these pioneer families was the Trottiers, who settled on a farm that still stands today just south of the town center. The Trottiers were originally from France and came to America in 1682. In 1811, William Ramsey built the first store in what is now St. Marys when he opened his business at Fourth and Pine streets. In 1819, two brothers named John Fetterman bought land near present day Stroudsburg for a community development project called Harmony Township. The township was organized on October 1, 1821 and became part of Pittsburgh County on January 1, 1825. On December 12, 1830, Harmony Township voters passed an Ordinance creating a new school district within its boundaries that would serve as the precursor to modernized Pittston School District #1. On February 9, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his way into town and ordered all male residents between the ages of 20 and 44 to leave their homes without warning or explanation - this event is known as "Ewell's Raid". Many local farmers had fled Union forces before Ewell's raid began but many more followed him thereafter as they saw no other choice given Union forces' numerical superiority at that time compared to Confederate forces occupying southern Pennsylvania countryside . A memorial to those lost during Ewell's Raid can still be found northeast of town off Ulysses S Grant Boulevard near Magee Cemetery: A granite monument marks where about 350 men were killed or taken prisoner during Ewell's raid including many children under age 10 years old
