Sharon, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The population was 7,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Easton-Middletown, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1798 by colonists from England and named for General Israel Sharon who fought in the American Revolution. The Sharon post office was established on February 14, 1798, and remained in operation until it closed on October 15, 1872. The first storekeeper in Sharon was James Sweeny and his wife Polly Sweeny. Other early merchants include John McCracken and his son David McCracken. In 1801, William Penn granted patent to Moses Brown for land that now includes present day Sharon Township and other areas of Lehigh County. Brown built a gristmill on the site of today's First United Methodist Church in 1802 and started selling flour to local farmers. In 1812, he erected a frame house on what is nowMarket Street which served as the town's first courthouse until replaced by the current building in 1907. Sharon became an incorporated borough in 1903 when all of Lehigh County was divided into municipalities subject to commonwealth regulation. At this time, Sharon had a population of 1,870 citizens; however, its size diminished rapidly after World War I when many farms were abandoned due to wartime shortages of food resources; consequently fewer people resided within the borough limits during peacetime years than did during wartime years because services provided by municipal government were limited to fire protection (police), streets cleaning (municipal builder), trash collection (private operator), light policing (Public Works Department) and ambulance service (emergency medical services). In 1948 Borough Council adopted resolutions establishing policies for budgeting and spending which remain effective today; these policies were later formalized into ordinances passed by Borough Council with amendments dated July 2nd 1978 through December 6th 1980 called "Borough Budget Policy Annotated", hereafter "the Policies". Prior thereto there had been no specific guidelines or procedures governing how money may be spent within Borough Council chambers without prior approval from Mayor Morgenthau or Vice Mayor Fenton as required by state law setting forth detailed rules regarding budgetary procedure including appropriations requests/allocations Nos 5 & 6 supra note 3 & accompanying text pp 9-10 para 2 . Sharon was named after a daughter of George Washington and Martha Washington. The first settlers in what is now Sharon were farmers who arrived in 1795 and soon built a log cabin on the banks of the Schuylkill River. The original post office was established here in 1807. The town's name comes from Sarah Josepha Hale, one of six daughters of Senator John Quincy Adams (one of America's Founding Fathers). Her father had moved to PA from Massachusetts when she was young and he took her home for summer vacation. When he got back to MA, he met Sarah Josepha Hale and they became friends. She came to PA with him when he married his second wife Julia Child (they had two children). After their divorce, Sarah Josepha Hale moved back to Massachusetts but continued to visit her old friend John Quincy Adams every chance she got- so much so that they eventually formed another friendship over letters! In 1848, while living in Boston with her son John Quincy Adams III., Sarah Josepha Hale ran into James Kappanich at an opera performance and fell madly in love with him- something she could never do because he was already married! So instead she wrote him a letter confessing her feelings! They continue corresponding until his death three years later...In 1848 James Kappanich founded what would become known as Kappanich Paper Mills which today employs many people including many local high school students! Sharon quickly grew popular for its natural beauty; it has been called "the most beautiful place on Earth" by numerous magazines including "People". One early resident said about Sharon: "There can be no question about it: This little village takes its title from the country around it." The community saw some growth during World War II as many residents served their country either through military service or through businesses like Penn Central Railroad which manufactured steel products for war production. But following the war there were few new arrivals as most residents left for more gunfire friendly territory such as California or Illinois due to economic reasons rather than move away from SHANORA!. After being vacant for several years during the 1990s due to development within Bucks County Mall across the border in nearby Allentown, Shannons opening brought much success as an arts center and retail store serving local farmers markets throughout central PA until closure in 2006 due to poor management/ownership along with low attendance rates leading to financial difficulties only reopened briefly under new ownership before closing once againigen 2013 .
