Sharon, Pennsylvania is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Sharon was George Washington who arrived in 1781 and surveyed what is now Sharon Township. The first store opened on July 1, 1821 by John Fenton and his son Moses Fenton. That same year, the town of Sharon was laid out by commissioners from Lebanon Township to form a new township. In 1825, when the Susquehanna Railroad was completed through Lackawanna County, small towns like Shamokin and Lancaster were incorporated into Sharon as well; however Parsonsburg became the first town in that township to be incorporated as a separate village on November 2nd of that year. On December 12th 1850 during the Mexican–American War (1846–48), General Zachary Taylor ordered all fortifications along the Susquehanna River destroyed including those within Sharon Township which included Fort Washington which guarded Upper New York Bay from attack by Mexico. As a result of this order many settlers fled to other areas such as Westmoreland County or Canada. When peace came it was determined that most of these men had died in battle or while living off their land so muchso that no compensation could be given them for their losses including cattle and equipment they left behind when they left for war purposes. As a result of this conflict some properties were taken over by military forces and others became part of Bethlehem Steel Company’s anthracite coal mine until it closed down in 1984 leaving much property abandoned with little hope for future development until retail development began around 2000 coming about due to Interstate 81 making its way through town center followed by light industrial redevelopment beginning around 2005 bringing more jobs into town after years being vacant or unused
