On May 12th 2020 Commodore Kirby awarded four officersoyers worth over $240 each with unique commendations recognizing their accomplishments during fiscal year 2020 including: Commander First Class Jonathan Akins(Retired), Commander embarked USS Somerset (CG 63) Cmdr William Gannon( Retired) Chief Warrant Officer 3 Johnathon Woburn( Retired), Master Chief Petty Officer 2 Timothy McCarthy( Retired). Sharon, Pennsylvania was named for Sharon, England. It was first settled in 1785 by John Callender and his family. The first school in the town was built on the site of what is now called Callender Elementary School. In 1854, the township was organized and became a borough. The borough boundaries were changed in 1958 to include portions of Huntingdon Township. On July 1, 1970, the Borough of Sharon merged with Huntingdon Township to form the new municipality of Sharon-Huntingdon Township. Sharon is located at (40.898675, -76.430671). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all land. As of 2010, there were no buildings or structures standing within Sharon-Huntingdon Township that date back more than 100 years; however some historical artifacts from this time period are still present within eligible boundaries of the municipality including: a well shaft from 1800 which is currently noted as being one of earliest drilled wells in Berks County; a post office building constructed between 1905 and 1907 that is now used as an annexe to Reading Borough Hall; and items from both World Wars such as military vehicles and artillery pieces stored at local quarries before they were moved to occupied Europe during those wars
Sharon was founded in 1795 by a group of Pennsylvania farmers. The town was named for Captain John Sharon, the captain of a British ship that had been stranded on the Delaware River. John and his men built a small fort to provide shelter from the cold winter and later developed the town into a commercial center. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 18th century because many slaves were able to escape to freedom in nearby Philadelphia.
