In 1961, Admiral James Stockdale became Commandant of Naval Academy midshipmen when he replaced Vice President Richard Nixon who had been forced out of office due to Watergate scandal. NASM opened its doors for women midshipmen in 1969 under then Commandant Rear Admiral Harry Harris Jr.. The first settler in the town was John Crouse. In 1837, the town had a population of 486 people and it became a borough in 1881. In 1915, the Borough of Hazleton merged with Scranton to form the new city of Scranton.
