The Scranton National Guard was established on December 15, 1907. The unit was created to provide a reserve force for the city of Scranton. The unit was initially organized into four companies and twelve sections. On October 1, 1910, the company level was abolished and the section level was adopted. On November 6, 1911, the first regiment of the National Guard was organized in Scranton with three companies (the first being Company B). On November 12, 1912, the second regiment of the National Guard was organized in Scranton with two companies (the second being Company C). On February 16, 1913, all national guard units were combined into one regiment under command of Major General John H. Pershing. This organization increased the strength of the Guards to twenty-four Companies and two regiments total. It opened in 1998 and is located on the former barracks of The Pennsylvania Railroad Company in downtown Scranton. The Scranton metropolitan area had a population of 491,098 as of 2013. The site where Scranton now stands was first settled by the Monongahela Indians in 1768 and was called "Nanticoke" after the Nanticoke River which flows through it. In 1824, Scranton became part of the Union Township in Erie County. On March 25, 1829, it became an independent city and incorporated as a town under the name of "Scranton." In 1892–1893 it absorbed the adjacent townships of Unicoi and Wilkes-Barre to form what is now known as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1903–1904 General Electric built its corporate headquarters on Forbes Avenue in downtown Scranton; this contributed greatly to Scranton's growth during that time period and helped make it one of America's leading industrial cities. Today GE remains one of the largest employers in town with over 100 employees located throughout downtown and across three dozen buildings on two miles (3 km) of streets including five major skyscrapers - all within walking distance for residents and visitors alike! Many manufacturing companies closed down or moved out during World War II; however, many others opened up once again after hostilities ended. Examples include GEICO automobile insurance company (now part of Allstate), Allied Signal Corporation (now part of Siemens AG), Alcoa Aluminum Company (later UALCO), American CanInc., Butler Paper Products Company (later Wabash PaperProducts), DuPont demineralized coal products plants #1 & #2 (now parts of Xcel Energy Corp.), GMC truck manufacturers' body shop (#4), Hershey Chocolate Industries Limited Partnership Candies factory building #5/6 which also housed Erie County Courthouse until 1984 when that structure was replaced by a new courthouse building designed by Philadelphia architect Wallace Greene Jr., who had also designed City Hall Building for Buffalo’s New York State government

Scranton is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Europeans in 1736. In 1838, it became the capital of what was then known as Western Pennsylvania. The town's name came from an early settler, John Scranton, who named it for his home scanty on the Susquehanna River. In 1853, Scranton became the seat of government for Lackawanna County and its boundaries were expanded to include present-day Wilkes-Barre Township and portions of both Lebanon and Hazleton townships. In 1907, Scranton annexed Bethlehem Township which had been part of Lebanon Borough since 1885. This made Scranton the second largest municipality in Lancaster County after Reading. On November 15th of that year residents approved resolutions providing for annexation by Bethlehem Township to form a new city with a population of 100,000 people within 10 years; this was later formalized as a city charter on December 11th 1920 The extensive manufacturing industry during World War II led to heavy production losses for Scranton throughout most of the war but especially during 1942 when it produced more than all other municipalities in Lancaster County combined After the war ended and factories closed down throughout much of eastern PA due to low demand following Korea and Vietnam there was joblessness throughout much of postwar America but not so inScRANTON where many jobs returned once again thanks largely to restarting factories . Despite some hard times over recent decades there has also been steady growth keeping pace with Erie’s growing economy
