Navy gift history in Reading can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first navy gifts were given to the town of Reading by Commodore John C. Sterett during their visit to the area in 1812. Commodore Sterett brought a number of items with him, including cannons and rifles, which he distributed among the sailors of his ship, the USS Constitution. The gift of guns and ammunition to Reading was followed by other donations from Commodore Sterett throughout his career as a naval officer. In 1827, Rear Admiral George Dewey gave reading its own set of cannons for use in defense against attacks from pirates off the coast of Africa. Between 1827 and 1861, Reading received more than $2 million worth of military equipment and supplies from various American navies. Reading, Pennsylvania was founded in 1751 by the brothers John and James Frame. The town was named for George Washington, who had been born in nearby Fairfax County in 1731. The first store in Reading opened on Main Street in 1753. Reading quickly became a major center of trade and commerce, thanks to its location at the intersection of two important routes: the Susquehanna River and the York Road. The towns growth continued through the early 1800s, led by its booming mills and cotton plantations. In 1827, Reading became part of what is now Erie County; during this time, it experienced a dramatic transformation as Plainfield Township merged into the town. In 1834, Reading's population reached 10,000 people; within a few years, it had doubled that number. By 1840, some 30% of all manufactured goods exported from Lancaster County were produced in Reading alone. During the 19th century reading also saw significant waves of immigration: many Germans settled here during this time period while Poles arrived during World War II. After World War II ended, much ofReading's manufacturing sector went away – although some businesses such as Jiffy Lube remain active today – but its cultural life has never slowed down. Theater companies like United Artists Broadcasting Company (UABC) and Philadelphia Playhouse continue to produce qualitystage productions throughout the year at various locations around town. Additionally there are several museums located within walking distance of most residents including one devoted exclusively to local history called "The History Museum."
In 1812, the United States of America was founded. In 1825, a new land grant was made to John Armstrong in what is now Berks County. On July 1, 1827, Armstrong donated 4 acres of his farm near Reading to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in memory of his father and mentor, Judge James Armstrong. The land became known as Armstrong's Hill. On November 3rd, 1830, when the Allegheny Mountains were explored by General Arthur Stroud and Colonel George Washington Thomson for the United States Geological Survey (USGS), they discovered large coal fields in what is now western Pennsylvania. Coalmining began on Armstrong's Hill in 1831 and gradually spread throughout Berks County until it became an important industry in this area. With increased production came increased population growth and development on Armstrong's Hill which led to the erection of numerous homes and businesses including a flour mill built by John Denny in 1840 and a grocery store built by Geo. Garnett in 1860-1861. Steel mills arrived after World War II but declined due to competition from other industries such as automobiles and textiles. This period marked a major change for Armstrong's Hill as many families left their homes to commute into larger cities or towns nearer Philadelphia while others bought newer homes closer to work or school. By 1970 there were only a few scattered families remaining on the hill with most properties having been sold or rented out). In recent years some residents have started restoring parts of Armstrong's Hill while others are working towards creating a community hub similar to those found in nearby Philadelphia where people can come together for activities such as cultural events or shopping at local boutiques
