The Reading National Guard was organized on July 16, 1776, in response to the Declaration of Independence. The guard was initially composed of men from Berks County and Lancaster County. On December 9, 1779, the Pennsylvania General Assembly passed a resolution that established a national guard system in Pennsylvania. The first regiment was raised in Reading on January 15, 1780. It was called the 1st Regiment of Artillery based in Reading. The 1st Regiment of Artillery served for three years and then became 3rd Regiment of Artillery on November 3, 1781. In 1812 the regiment was redesignated as 6th Regiment of Foot (later 7th Infantry) under command of Major General John Sullivan who had been named inspector general for artillery at war with Great Britain. After serving two campaigns against Napoleon I in 1814 and 1815 at Yorktown Peninsula, Virginia near Petersburg Beach, Virginia the regiment became part of Ulysses S Grant’s army during his invasion of Mexico City in 1846 and fought at Monterrey Battle Field on October 20-21 before being mustered out at San Antonio de Bexar on November 10. In 1865 after the American Civil War ended the armory closed but it reopened as an armory/industrial plant twice during World War II before closing again due to economic reasons after hostilities ceased in 1945. However it reopened briefly again beginning in 1984 until its closure once more effective February 5th 1992 when it merged into Bethlehem Steel Corporation's other plants making Reading one of four plants which closed permanently all together - this left one community without an industrial center for over fifty years!
