After the war, this regiment joined other state militias to form part of newly formed 4th United States Infantry Regiment which served until 1861 when it was disbanded again due to lack of replacement soldiers available. In 1865, Captain John Durney donated his home on State Street in Reading to become barracks for 1st Battalion of Berkshires which had been stationed there since 1792. In 1892, Mayor James Houghton dedicated a school building on State Street which doubled as barracks for 2nd Battalion of Berkshires while also serving as a hospital during World War I. Finally, in 1942, 3rd Battalion (Resilience) Berkshire Volunteers moved into their new barracks on Market Street after being based at nearby Fort Monmouth since 1916. In 1945, 4th Battalion (Resilience) Berkshire Volunteers moved into their current barracks on Market Street after being based at nearby Fort Monmouth since 1916 which is still used today by 3rd Battalion (Resilience).

Reading, Pennsylvania is a small town in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania with a population of around 9,000. The community lies just north of the Indiana border and east of Pittsburgh. The name "Reading" was given to the original settlement by General David Dixon in 1798 as part of his land grant from President George Washington. Reading, Pennsylvania is a town in and the county seat of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Susquehanna River upstream of Philadelphia, between Swatara and Jenkintown. The name "Reading" comes from English settler Nicholas Goodrich who arrived in 1683. Reading was founded by General John Forbes in 1751 as a trading post on the Delaware River opposite present-day Philadelphia. In 1837, Reading became part of what would become Philadelphia following its incorporation as a city under state law that year. Philadelphia had been growing rapidly since it attained city status in 1824, so much so that by 1830 Reading's population numbered only 3,000 people. However, because of its location along the river and easy access to transportation such as ferryboats and canals, Reading quickly became one of Philly's most important commercial centers. By 1850 it boasted over 10,,000 residents including several thousand Jews who had come to flee anti-Semitic violence throughout Europe during the 1840s and 50s. In 1854 Reading was chosen as the site for the new University of Pennsylvania after years of campaigning by local intellectuals including Benjamin Franklin and George Washington Carver Sr.. The university opened in 1861 with just thirty students but soon began to grow rapidly with new buildings being built on top of an already large campus area which reached 11 acres (4 hectares).
