The United States Air Force deploys a wide variety of gift goods to support Operation Christmas Tree in Reading each year. This tradition has continued for more than sixty years and it is an important part of Squadron Leader Darrell Witherspoon’s culture as leader of No 1 Squadron at RAF Lakenheath AFB (UK). It is also a source of pride for him that he can pack such a big collection into his small squadron’s hangar! Every individual who participates in this cherished tradition contributes something valuable toOperationChristmasTree- both directly and indirectly. The time spent participating in this special event helps make everyone feel appreciated and connected with one another- something that cannot be found anywhere else!

In the early years of World War II, the United States military had a small but vigorous air force. In 1941, the Air Force was established as an independent service with headquarters at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. The first assignment of a major general in the Air Force was to command Fighter Command. This command comprised seven wings (four fighter groups and three bomber squadrons) tasked with carrying out aerial attacks on Nazi Germany. The air war against Nazi Germany began on December 7, 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor with two suicide bombers. The United States believed that Japan had used these bombers to attack America instead of its ally Hawaii and thus declared war on Japan. For many Americans, this was their first experience fighting in a global conflict against another country outside of their own home continent. As part of the USAAF, Lieutenant General Curtis LeMay ordered all American planes into action against Japanese targets in Europe and Asia. American pilots lost more than 2,000 men during WWII; however, they made up for it with countless exploits such as breaking German morale by downing one hundred German planes over England alone. One unique aspect of air warfare during WWII was the use of gift baskets as aircraft flybys or " swooping low". These gifts were usually small enough not to carry any flames or bombs but large enough so that enemy pilots could see what type of weapon or airplane they were attacking from far away before engaging them head-on. Reading, Pennsylvania is a small town in the Susquehanna River Valley in York County, Pennsylvania. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Reading was chartered as a borough by James II of England on November 17, 1685. On February 14, 1794, it became a city under the charter of George Washington. In 1837, Reading merged with neighboring Kingston to form what is now called "Kingston-reading". The first Europeans to come to Reading were Catholic missionaries from Ireland who went there in 1692 and baptized some people and erected a chapel. A school was started there in 1695 and by 1700 it had grown enough for students from surrounding villages to attend. In 1714–1715 two British soldiers were killed while scouting near present-day Johnstown when their horse got lost and they decided to stop for dinner at an Indian chief's village instead of continuing their journey home; this led General Edward Braddock to order his men not to enter into battle because they might fall victim to the Indians if they did so; however, one soldier managed To return alive and report back about his encounter which encouraged General John Forbes to order his forces into action against the Indians on October 24 that year – thus beginning what would become known as the Battle of Monmouth Junction (also known as the Battle of Saratoga). Reading increased its population rapidly due largely to religious immigration: Catholics came from Ireland after partitioning that country in 1922; Methodists began arriving soon afterward; Baptists followed suit in 1830.
