Pottsville is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The Pottsville Mills are a historic cotton mill complex that were once one of the largest and most successful mills in the U.S.. The first coffee beans were roasted on October 8, 1796, by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his partner Pierre-Simon LaFontaine in what is now known as Warner's Mill (now part of University Park). At that time, only two people in America roasted coffee - Nicholas-Jacques Conte and David Garrick - and it took until 1847 for roasting to become an established industry in North America. In 1853, John Jacob Astor founded The New York Coffee House at 4th and Market Streets in downtown Philadelphia which became world headquarters for coffee brewing before moving to Seattle in 1893. In 1865, George Peabody established Peabody & Company at 9th and Arch Streets near Bethlehem Steel Works with a business model where he roasted whole beans for sale direct to consumers instead of selling them through distributors like himself. This allowed him to develop a large scale commercial production campaign that helped pioneer modern drip coffee brewing methods. By 1910, Pottsville had over 60 grocery stores including 7 pharmacies open serving local brewers named Johnnie Capps Brewing Co., Blue Bottle Coffee Co., Cumberland Coffee Roasters Inc., First National Coffee Co., Herrington's Grocery COFFEE HOUSE INC., Keystone Creameries Incorporated and Three Sisters Coffee & Tea COFFEEHOUSE INC.. By 1920 there were over 130 clubs/groups involved with all sorts of amateur activities such as rising sun flag raising ceremonies at 4th Street Baptist Church on July 3rd each year during summertime; potters' markets; carnival games; beauty pageants; concerts; duck hunting tournaments etc... By 1930 it was estimated that over 1 million cups of Joe had been brewed from Pottsville beans!

Pottsville is the second most populous incorporated community in York County after York City. It is located on the Susquehanna River and has a total area of 38 square miles (100 km²). The first permanent settler in Pottsville was Nicholas Morrell who arrived in 1784. He founded what is now known as Morrelltown on land he granted to George Washington for his military service during the American Revolution. Morrelltown served as an early center for commerce and transportation on the Susquehanna River. After two years of construction, Morrell's store failed to open due to low customer demand and he returned home empty-handed. In 1786, another pioneer named John Armstrong erected a sawmill just east of present day Pottsville on the then unincorporated community of Armstrongstown. The mill became one of the most important commercial centers in western Pennsylvania because it produced high-quality lumber for buildings and other products such as furniture and farm equipment. By 1825, logging had become so prevalent that Pottsville post office was renamed "Lumberton" in honor of local loggers who contributed much to its growth over these years In 1826, petitioners from nearby Uniontown submitted plans for a stoplight at what is now Market Street near where US 33 crosses Interstate 70 today. The petitioners were successfully able to get support from surrounding communities before their proposal received approval from Penn Central Railroad officials in December 1886 A year later, work began on building what would become State University of Pennsylvania's ("SUP") main campus across from downtown Pottsville – one of only two universities established outside Philadelphia during this time period When completed in 1889, SUSP became one of America's leading research institutions . Grant issued his famous Proclamation on Slavery in America which called for emancipation of all slaves in the United States. The pottinger-born Abraham Lincoln won the Ulysses S. Grant election as President of the United States and signalled a new era in American history where slavery would be abolished through peaceful Means or by force if necessary. The town changed hands several times during its history before it became a borough in 1898. It has since reverted to its original name and status as a township since then.
