Pottsville is a small town in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,354 at the 2010 census. It is the borough seat of Potter Township and lies in the eastern part of the state on the Allegheny River. The first known permanent European settlers in Pottsville were three German farmers who came overland from Westphalia in 1682. They named their settlement "Pottsville" after Justice John Potts, one of their number. In 1764, when James Nicholas Braddock and his forces invading British territory traveled through what is now Pottsville on their way to attack Fort Duquesne, some residents took refuge inside a barn near Centerbrook until they could be driven out by troops under General Edward Braddock. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War, Confederate General Robert Ewell skirmished with Union General George Buford near present-day Pottsville while Cavalry Colonel Hugh Wills led a detachment of horsemen into battle against cavalryman under Lieutenant Colonel Elias Cushing. Afterward several houses were burned down around town and most likely because of this skirmish or because Confederates had mistaken Buford's force for an advancing Union column which did not actually exist. After the war, potters began moving into settlements throughout western Pennsylvania as land became available for farming following Reconstruction following American victory over Mexico in that conflict. By 1870 about 60% of all potters living in Pennsylvania were located within Potter Township; it was less than 10% statewide at that time. In 1875+, local leaders organized a township government with its own school board and treasurer/council; this also established community volunteer fire departments and daycare facilities services during those years before becoming fullyVillage-wide organizations by 1959. During World War II many people worked at military camps located nearby such as Camp Butler (now White Sands Missile Range) and Camp Mills (now US Army Garrison Atglen). Pottsville was a small town in eastern Pennsylvania located on the Pottsville River. It was founded by Captain John Potts and his family in 1764. The town grew rapidly due to its location and commerce, and by 1800 it had a population of nearly 2,000 people. In 1823, Pottsville became the capital of what would become West Virginia. However, despite this success, Pottsville struggled during the Great Depression. In 1933, the town merged with nearby Chinese Township to form one municipality called Potterstown. By the late 1990s, however, Potterstown had shrunk back to its original size and ceased to exist as an independent municipality. Despite this decline, Pottsville retains a rich history that can be seen today in its many buildings and landmarks such as the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum and the Alexander Hamilton Presidential House.
