The Navy intervened in Pottstown, Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. The town was established on October 26, 1777 by John Forbes and named for Rear Admiral Sir George Monck, 1st Baronet. The first naval ship to dock at Pottstown was HMS Victory on November 5, 1777. Navy ships stationed in the area during the Revolutionary War included USS Constitution (Caesar), USS Rodney (Cumberland), USS Preble (Norfolk) and USS Somers (Samuel Pepys). In total, 24 naval vessels were stationed at Pottstown between 1777 and 1800. After the War ended, the navy left Pottstown but it continued to be a stop for warships travelling between Philadelphia and Baltimore until 1805 when Philadelphia built its own navy yard. In 1899, Naval Air Station Willow Grove was opened in nearby Maycomb Township as part of an effort by then-President Grover Cleveland to increase United States military power abroad. Willow Grove would become one of nine naval air stations operating outside of America during World War II. In 1951–1952, Naval Sea Systems Command's Washington Naval Shipyard constructed two submarines called "The Seawolf" and "The Grumman Goose". These submarines served as experiments for new submarine design features that would later be put into use on The USS Arizona (SSN 721). After their construction completed they were transferred to Newport News Shipbuilding where they remain today as both operational submarines and museum exhibits.
