It is the largest of the six towns in Lackawanna County by population. Pottstown is bordered to the south by Scranton and to the north by Lackawanna Junction. Pottstown was founded in 1795 as part of what would become Scranton Township. It incorporated as a borough in 1824 and became a city on March 15, 1892. The name "Pottstown" comes from Potts Tavern which was located on Main Street between Second and Third Streets until it burned down in 1903. The first store in Pottstown opened on December 10, 1795 under the name of Nicholas Merrick & Co.. By 1800 there were nine stores in Pottstown with about $5 per capita income. In 1824, porters named John Potter and George Washington made their mark as leaders of local commerce when they opened Potter's Store #2 on Court Street between Market Place and 3rd Avenue South. This store served as a hub for early trade within Pottstown and across Lackawanna County; goods came from all over Turtle Creek Valley including Reading (now Allentown), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Bradfordtown (now Clearfield), Ashtabula/Allegheny City, Bethlehem/Northampton County and beyond. In 1870 alone potters operated 363 businesses with an annual revenue of $1 million dollars according to one source - this number has been estimated to be even higher due to recent advancements in technology that allow for analysis of sales data from eighteenth century Merchants Records! In 1824 John Potter laid out land east of Court Street near Second Avenue South - this area now includes much of present day downtown Pottstown along Market Place just east of Third Avenue South - which he called Beaver Hill because Chief Beaver had hunted thereabouts previous centuries while hunting deer also found inside present day limits of Scranton Township west side creek bed including areas now known as Northumberland Heights and Shadyside real estate developer Harry Fenton developed much land surrounding historic Beaver Hill lots starting around 1930 consisting mostly residential blocks bounded by Fourth Ave., Fifth Ave., Sixth Ave., Seventh Ave., Eighth Ave., Ninth Ave.- these blocks are currently occupied by Highland Park Middle School gymnasium housing Athletic Department staff plus some commercial activity located behind building along alley lined with high school football fields
