Pottstown is a town in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Pottstown is one of two townships in Westmoreland County and is bordered by Monroe Township to the east, Armstrong Township to the south, and Armstrong County to the west. Pottstown was founded in 1784 by James Pottenger and others as a small trading post on Little Conestoga Creek near present-day Monroeville. In 1811, Pottenger became proprietor of what would become known as "The Potteries" which were located along the Susquehanna River in present-day Lombard Township. The Potters produced flour, soap and other produce until World War II when they shifted their production to munitions plants at Greensburg and Homestead in southwestern Pennsylvania. During much of this time they operated out of what is now known as "The Potteries Building". In 1853, John Ritchie purchased land adjoining James Pottenger's farmstead for $2700 which he used for farming purposes until his death in 1865. He bequeathed his land to his son John Ritchie III who developed it into an agricultural community with a market garden center that remains today adjacent to Firestone Tire & Rubber Company headquarters on North Fifth Avenue (now Fort Pitt Boulevard). At its peak during World War II there were up to 400 residents living in six buildings within a radius of . Pottstown, Pennsylvania is a town in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,718 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Pottstown was founded in 1764 as a small farming community on the Allegheny River by George Washington and his family. In 1814, Pottstown became the seat of Carbon County after it was created from parts of Monongalia and York counties. The first settler in what would become Pottstown was George Washington himself. He and his brother-in-law Colonel John Armstrong moved to the area in 1764 from Huntingdon Township in Westmoreland County because they wanted land that had been granted to them by King George II for their military service during the French and Indian War. When they arrived, they found that most of what they were looking for had already been taken by other settlers. However, they did find some good land nearby and started to farm it. By 1800, there were about fifty homes in Pottstown with around six hundred people living there. In 1814, when Carbon County was created from parts of Monongalia and York counties, Pottstown became its seat. At that time, it consisted only of a few scattered farms near the river where people gathered to trade goods or watch commerce pass by on account of its location within easy reach of both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia (then called Annapolis). One reason why this town grew so rapidly during this time is because transportation between these two cities was very difficult; driving took hours one way or another! Although many residents still relied on horseback riding or walking to get around as transportation became more accessible through improved roads and bridges later on in history (including those built into downtown Pittsburgh), starting in 1825 plugging up all three ends of the county courthouse made public transportation much easier for everyone involved – even those who could not travel! This helped make commuting to work much less expensive for everyone involved over time which has had a significant impact on our city’s economy today! In 1840 Colonel John Armstrong’s son-in-law David Hogg purchased several thousand acres east of present day Pottstown along the Susquehanna River just north of where today’s Delaware Avenue meets Forbes Road – making him one of the earliest landowners west of Perrysburg (now part Ofallon). This purchase also gave rise to Hogg Run which continues down Dickinson Avenue until it reachesmontgomery road just southwest thereof leading directly into Beaverdam Creek – thus giving rise to what is now known as Beaverdam Creek Park! A new school building having been erected at 4th Street & Penn Avenue soon after opened its doors throughout grades 1-8 back then known as “Grades School No1″ though eventually renamed “Potsdam Academy” due to increased enrollment over time; following Mr./Ms Seward taking over administration leadership duties beginning with Grades 9th thru 12th grades starting fall term OF 2009/10
