However, these days much of Plum's economic activity takes place via services such as healthcare, education, retailing and government jobs. In addition to its economic stability, Plum has been known for its colorful history which dates back to 1795 when brothers John and James Plum founded the borough here. The Plums were pioneer farmers who developed what is now Plum into a thriving community that today enjoys significant cultural ties with nearby Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The name "Plum" may have originated from an early settler's observation that many apple trees in the area bore fruit abundantly but no company had bought them, indicating that they were not wild apples but rather tart pears grown by locals on their own land. Alternatively, it could be traced back to several Colonial era grants including one from Sir William Penn to three Scotsmen - Alexander McGillivray (17th century), John Gordane (18th century) and David Forbes (19th century). These Grants included 240 acres (112 hectares) of rich agricultural land stretching eastward from present-day Scranton downriver to Reading; this tract would later become known as "the plum orchard". In 1795 John & James Plum established a borough in what are now Plum Township & Cambria Borough while still living in London, England; they named their new township after themselves – henceforth called "Plumm Township." The first post office opened in 1801 within the newly formed township under the name "Lancaster." During this time there were only two families residing here: the Plums & their children along with four other pioneers: Elisha Applewhite Sr., Ebenezer Applewhite Jr., Ruth Stout & Levi Stout who all settled around 1800 near present day Centerbrook Village Shopping Center on State Street between Sylvester Road & Maple Avenue #2&3 along with five others – Samuel Biddle gristmill owner Hiram Bingham (& his family), Amos Barnes miller Isaac Bowman (& his family), Israel Herrick attorney general’s office founder Jonathan Herrick (& his wife Rachelle) etc.; plus ten tenants paying rent totaling $10 per month for “farmable ground” used for corn raising etc.—widespread rural village life during early 19th century consisted almost entirely of self-reliant yeomanry lifestyle characterized by elaborate patterns of home architecture dotting well over 100 square miles across six states!
