The Plum, Pennsylvania National Guard was established on September 17, 1918 when the Pennsylvania General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the state to create an organization to support military operations. The unit initially consisted of 10 men and was organized at Armstrongville. On November 3, 1918, the unit moved to Pittsburgh and were redesignated as the 999th Infantry Regiment. In 1940, they were again redesignated as the 104th Infantry Regiment and in 1951 they were again redesignated as the Plumsylvania National Guard. From 1957-1967 they were again redesignated as the 106th Infantry Regiment and from 1967-1975 they served as Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion for the 1st Brigade Combat Team of The Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
Plum is a small town in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Plum is one of two towns in Fayette County that were founded by English colonists in 1795 and remain entirely rural. The first settler in Plum was John Aiken who arrived with his family on July 10, 1795. John's brother-in-law Samuel Horsfall also came to live in the town in 1800. There were several other early settlers including James Caldwell and his son Daniel Caldwell who farmed land around what is now downtown Plum. In 1824, David Mellon bought about 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of downtown from Nicholas Cosby for $175 cash and donated it to the town for use as a public square and school district. The community name comes from "plum" meaning "weetness". Plum began to grow rapidly due to its location and access to transportation such as plank roads and trains which brought people and goods upriver to Pittsburgh amassing larger acreages for Settlement near what are now Perrysburg, Westmoreland Township, Conshohocken Township, Monongahela Borough, Meadville Borough and Steelton Borough. By 1870 there were 1,500 residents living in Plum with a total assessed valuation of $2 million. In 1916 plum had an election where incumbent Mayor MCLAUGHLIN lost re-election against future U S Senator ARNOLD SCHWARTZENBERG by only 9 votes out of 2118 cast! In 1924 Mayor JAMES KELLY won re-election with over 71% of the vote while challenger WILLIAM WALKER received just 21%. On November 3rd 1928 City Council passed Resolution No 601 setting aside part of city block N ( bounded by Elm Street on the north side; Vernon Avenue on the south side; Walnut Street on the east side) for use as a new city hall building which would serve as our present day municipal courthouse! This amazing event marked not only our first municipally run government but also our incorporation into what would become Allegheny County! On December 6th 1930 voters approved a referendum asking if they wanted their taxes raised effective January 1st 1931 when township government was abolished along with all other local governments within Allegheny County! The referendum passed by an overwhelming margin being 98% in favor!! In 1935 Mayor CHARLES PEARSON resigned after serving four terms exceeding six years without interruption!!! He had been mayor since 1922 when he took office followingMayor JOHN KELLY's death which occurred less than one year before mayoral term limits were put into effect!!!!! After lengthy consideration City Council voted 7-1 on February 21st 1936 to appoint EDWARD RUSSELL as Acting Mayor until another election could be held!!!!! Mr Russel served until May 3rd 1938 when he abruptly resigned due to health problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On October 5th 1940 borough council passed resolution approving annexation by steelton borough!!! Residents there had objected strenuously however this annexation never happened becauseSteelton did not have enough voters support!!!

After the battle of Gettysburg on July 4th, 1863, most National Guardsmen returned home; however a few thousand men remained in Union service until 1865 when all military forces were disbanded due to peace negotiations ending the American Civil War.
