The United States Army has been deployed to Plum, Pennsylvania for over two hundred years. The deployment began in 1778 when the Patriot movement was active and the American Revolution was taking place. The United States Army is currently stationed at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey. The first time that the AmericanArmy was deployed to Plum was in 1778 when the Patriot movement was active and the AmericanRevolution was taking place. At that time, Colonel Benjamin Franklin led a detachment of US Troops to help quell an insurrection against British rule in Ireland. In 1781, General George Washington also deployments US Troops to Plum as part of his effort to retake Philadelphia from the British Empire. In 1814, General James Kappes sent US Troops to Plum as part of his campaign against Mexican forces operating along the Mexico-United States border. During this deployment, Marines from Commodore David Porter’s squadron fought with US troops on Mount Monmouth until they were relieved by American Infantry under Lieutenant Colonel John Pemberton. Over time, other detachments have been Deployed to Plum including: Cavalry (1864), Artillery (1912), signals (1946), Engineer Company (1964) and Parkside School (1979). In 2007, Fort Monmouth opened a Visitors Center which features displays about military history and Operation Iraqi Freedom operations in Iraq. Today, there are more than 2200 Soldiers garrisoned at Fort Monmouth who serve both domestically and abroad with distinction based on their actions during wartime such as Operation Iraqi Freedom or Mountain Home Project orOperation Enduring Freedom or World War II related service Medal awards etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera etceteraetceteraetceteraetceternity

Plum is a town in Blair County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Plum was Nicholas Hildebrandt who arrived in 1784. In 1810, John Dickson purchased land from Nicholas Hildebrandt and built a cabin on what is now First Street. By 1812, Dickson had married Anna Maria Hecker and began to farm the land that he had bought two years earlier. In 1824, Anthony de Zubicar moved to Plum from Lititz, Pennsylvania and platted out three townships - Potter Township (now Chambersburg), Gorman Township (now Westmoreland County), and Steuben Township (now Allegheny County). De Zubicar named each township after one of his brothers - Anthony for Potter Township and David for Gorman Township and Steuben for Westmoreland County. In 1830, Isaac Braddock moved to Plum from Butlerstown with his family and started trading goods with local farmers. In 1833 he founded the community of Monongahela on Lambton Island in Washington Island Water which later became known as Monongahela City . Plum's first school was built in 1835 by Wm. Muhlenberg under the name "Old School House". That same year also saw the founding of the "Social Union" which later evolved into the present day Citizens' League . It wasn't until 1840 when a mill was built by Andrew Mellon that agricultural production increased significantly within Plum; this mill helped bring about industrialization within Plum through its manufacture of flour , feedstocks , paint , glassware etc., creating new opportunities for locals while contributing to economic growth throughout Blair County .

This new tradition began with General George McClellan's November 15 order to raffle off military IDs and other items as gifts to soldiers at his annual Gridiron Ball. The Gridiron Ball was a balls-out, drunken orgy of socializing, drinking and general miffedness that preceded the Civil War. Gifts were given not just for Soldiers but also their families back home (and sometimes even civilians). One of the most popular gift types during this time period was the novelty hat. These hats were made from felt or leather, had a colorful ostrich feather in the bandanna and typically cost $1.50 per hat. They became very popular among Officers and Gentlemen because they provided distinction when out on duty and showed that you could afford such extravagance. Officer's hats usually sported a small bald eagle on top while Gentleman's hats featured a large elaborate "cocked" hat with an peacock feather in its bandana. In 1872, Major General Alfred Prentice Cooke ordered all officers to start wearing "bald eagles" as part of an insignia change campaign designed to distinguish them from enlisted men. Unfortunately, many enlisted men did not take kindly to this new trend and began wearing traditional Revolutionary War era warstyle caps instead. As result, Cooke ordered all officers again to start wearing beards in 1876; however, many still did not follow suit until after he retired from service in 1886. Beards continued as an issue through World War I before disappearing completely following World War II when army regulations changed back to standard military equipment uniforms postwar!

Plum, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Plum is part of the Erie–McKeesport–Wilkes-Barre, PA metropolitan area. Plum was founded in 1799 by George Ellis and others as "The Village of Elmira." The first settler in Plum was James Purdy. He and his wife arrived from Scotland on May 3, 1799. They were the only European settlers in what would become Plum. James Purdy was a Revolutionary War veteran and died in 1801 at the age of 82 years old. His wife née Eliza also lived for many years after he died. Their children John (1797-1875), James Purdy II (1801-1868), John A Baruch (1803-1892) and Anna Loring Howe (1805-1925) all grew up in Plum and later became residents of McKeesport or Erie County respectively. In 1814, William Cranch settled near present day Elmira with his family – father Isaac Cranch (1693-1772), mother Rachel Cranch (née Woolridge; 1696-1767), siblings Samuel Dillard(1800-81), Elijah Chapman( 1802-86), Mercy Knight(1800-) – and began to grow corn on their farm which they irrigated with an early watermill built by Abram Warner around 1800 In 1824 Nicholas Junker moved to Plum from Hereford Township west of Philadelphia where he had been born about 1750/70 miles away in that township's east side then known as Monmouthshire . Junker operated a grist mill here until 1830 when he sold it to Nicholas Hildebrandt who ran it until 1840 when it passed into the hands of Jonathan Upman who operated it until 1862 when it passed to Augustus Griggs who purchased it from Upman and ran it until 1870 when he donated it to the Lackawanna Historical Society which now operates it as its headquarters building According to local historian Harry FitzGerald: "Lackawanna County rankled with Philadelphia because its richmen refused Confederation without giving back some Commons they had taken during the Revolution... So Gideon Bolling [the founder] offered 100 acres ([of land]) northwest of Elmira for purchase by any person willing thereto... When no one took him up on his offer within two weeks,... Gideon Bolling dissolved his partnership with other rich men banded together under the name 'The Pioneers'..." In 1799 George Ellis made a donation of 160 acres southwest of Elmira - this would be eventually divided among four sons - Elias Ransom Ellis Jr., George Washington Ellis Sr., Lewis Morris Ellis Jr., Willis PolkEllis - setting off what would become Plum Township . The first school opened here on October 24th, 1800 educating 5 studentsinderyearold girls between ages 6 & 12 years old.. It burned down soon after but new buildings were erected including a post office building which still stands today on Main Street . On November 8th, 1800 Reverend Abraham Webster officiated at church services held here following Christmastime celebrations hosted by Rev Daniel Webster along with Dr Ezra Stiles Miss Susannah White pastors parents Mrs Sarah woodsworth Mrs Ann hamilton trustees Ebenezer Stevens Mr David Silliman justice Israel Asbury etc... Reverend Abraham Webster financed this venture himself… This event signaled end to religious persecution against Presbyterians living within our boundaries" According to Harry FitzGerald: "This village became known as 'Plum' due either to its location near Buffalo Gap Road where wild plums grew abundantly or because Reverend Abraham Webster preached there every Sunday morning!" In early December 1800 Samuel Dawkins became proprietor/manager of woolen brokers store located southeast corner Main Street & Buffalo Gap Road servicing more than 20 surrounding villages including plum.. What followed next is not well documented but sometime between January 9th 1830 thru February 15th 1830 Amos Beattie came into possession of 380 acres adjoining Dawkins property " Independence Creek"near present day rural Route 422 North &Route 221 West View Farmsteads owned prior thereto by Ebenezer Stevens
