It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is located in Westmoreland County on the Monongahela River. The community was founded as a stop on the Underground Railroad in 1792 by black men fleeing to America from Africa. The first white settler arrived in 1817, and by 1825, Plum had a store and post office. By 1840, Plum had four churches and over 100 residents. In 1865, Plum became part of the newly created Washington County, which included all of west-central Pennsylvania except for what is now Delaware County and parts of Butler and York counties. In 1911, when Washington County was divided into Butler and Allegheny Counties, Plum lost its status as a town but continued to be called "Plum" until it was renamed to Bennington in 1959 after Benjamin Franklin Benning Sr., one of its early settlers. In 2015, Plum was made an official sister city with Warsaw, Poland
In Plum, Pennsylvania, the first school was built in 1792. The town was laid out by James Hays and it is named after him. It was part of Butler County until 1867 when it became part of Fayette County. In 1868, Plum was incorporated as a borough. In 1902, the town erected a public library and the first fire department in the area. In 1907, Plum became an incorporated city and in 1923 it annexed the neighboring town of Lawrenceville. On December 6th, 1929, Lawrenceville merged into Plum and the population of both towns increased by over 10%.
