The Pittsburgh National Guard was created on September 14, 1907 and raised in response to the Spanish-American War. The Guard was originally composed of militia units from the City of Pittsburgh and surrounding counties. In 1912, the Guard was reformed as a unit within the newly formed United States Army and became known as Battery A, 15th Infantry Regiment. This regiment served during World War I and World War II before being decommissioned in 1945. From 1946 until 1973, the garrison organized under state control but remained municipally funded. On July 15, 1973, the Pennsylvania General Assembly passed House Bill No. 5771 which designated all assets of cityowned or operated municipal corporations into a public trust called "The National Guard Gift History Trust." In 1987, Mayor Tom Murphy convened a task force to explore ways to improve the relationship between the city government and The National Guard Gift History Trust. The group's report recommended that all assets be transferred from city owned or operated municipal corporations into a single entity instead of being divided among several entities. On November 6, 1987, Mayor Murphy signed legislation creating The Pittsburg NationalGuard Gift History Trust with headquarters located at Allegheny County Courthouse Annex. Since its creation, The Pittsburg NationalGuard Gift History Trust has played an important role in helping preserveand protect cultural artifacts from destruction by fires or other causes. Additionally, the trust helps support Museum research projects and provides access to historical records for researchers who wish to study Pittsburgh's military history more deeply.

Finally, since then numerous Members of Congress have visited The George Washington Defense Monument including Senators John McCain (R-AZ) & Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Representative Steve King (R-IA), Mayor Michael Bloomberg (NYC), Governor Chris Christie (NJ), Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul (NYDN), Governors Robert Bentley(MD), Brian Sandoval(NM), Tom Corbett(PA) Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s father Professors Herb Kohlman from Penn State University & Emanuel Goldstein from Temple University gave speeches about how great things could be if we just invest more money into education which would help make sure everyone could achieve their dreams no matter where they came from or what color their skin were! These speeches showed public opinion changing dramatically towards NHG Unit membership which largely went hand-in-hand with increasing defense spending during WWII

The first state National Guard units were organized in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in 1802. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the creation of a National Guard Bureau to manage and organize the army's various components into an effective national force. The bureau was eventually renamed the National Guard Bureau in 1898. The militia law of 1792 provided that all male citizens over 21 years old could become militiamen without having to serve out a regular period of time or receive military training. Militia service began by individuals Militia companies formed at towns and villages throughout the colonies until 1800 when states began organizing their own militias statewide.

For many years, this location served as an important center for trade between British North America and Europe. By 1768, however, the outpost hadgrown too large for its original occupants to manage alone and so it was taken over by European fur traders from France and Scotland. In 1793, Philadelphia began construction of the first major road through what is now Pittsburgh; this road would eventually become known as Route 66. The development of Pittsburgh was also helped by technological advances at that time: in 1814, Congress passed legislation authorizing Pennsylvania to build a canal system linking Great Lakes ports with Atlantic seaports. This canal would ultimately prove vital in enabling Pittsburghers to participate in both global markets and their own economic growth – during this period, Pittsburghers were some of the most prosperous residents of American cities! In 1853, Pittsburgh became an incorporated city under Pennsylvania law – during this time it quickly emerged as one of America’s leading industrial centers. At this point, Pittsburghers had already established themselves as leaders in manufacturing and commerce alike; their businesses thrived thanks to their innovative engineering feats such as constructing the world’s first water-powered paper mill (in 1855), developing world-class transportation systems (such as creating turnpikes), and building one of America’s largest steel mills (in 1914).
