In 1757, Captain John Smith discovered oil along the Monongahela River and began an OilFields Campaign to develop this resource. By 1859, over 20Oil wells had been drilled in Allegheny County and production continued until 1901. In 1876, fourteen years after John Forbes founded Pittsburgh as a town within Allegheny County and two years after construction of the first electric streetcar system in America started operating through Brown Streetcar Company (later renamed trolley company), steel mills were established in what would become known as Downtown Pittsburgh with help from Andrew Carnegie. Steel production increased rapidly during World War I due to wartime demand; during World War II it reached levels not seen prior to that time while also creating hundreds of jobs across districts such as Duquesne Boulevard where manufacturing ended around 1945 due to Allied bombing raids which destroyed most factories north of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
