The army was first deployed in the Pittsburgh area in 1775. The Pittsburgh Gazette article, "Drum Corps to Retire," reported on December 20, 1775 that the Drum Corps of America would be retiring after almost two centuries of service. The corps had performed at various military events throughout Pennsylvania and the United States since its creation. In 1861, when Pittsburg became a city, it acquired land for incorporation within the new city limits. This land included part of Allegheny County and some portions of Monongalia County. In 1870, Allegheny County was split into three parts again; Western (now downtown)Pittsburgh took part of what is now Beaver Township in Monongalia County while East Pittsburgh took part of what is now Uptown borough in Allegheny County. As a result, Steelers football fans can still enjoy watching their favorite team play games on local streets which are named after members of the military who served here during World War II or later: Fort Meade Avenue (Ralph Brown), Bloodworth Avenue (Homer Donell), Forbes Place (Edgar Allan Poe), Seward Street (Walter Reed Army Medical Center). In 1954, when Pittsburgh became an independent city once again, it also acquired land for incorporation within its boundaries as well as easternmost Mellon Park from Westmoreland Borough in Mercer County and donated it to the city as Carnegie Hill Cemetery. This cemetery is home to more than 10,000 soldiers and staff members buried there including many who died during World War II or later such as Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin who flew into space on Apollo 11.
