Phoenixville is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It was part of the 1820 merger of two other towns, Westphalia and Easton. Phoenixville is located on the south bank of the Monongahela River between Chambersburg and Pittsburgh. The first permanent settler in what is now Phoenixville was Andrew Henry who arrived in 1753 from England. He built a cabin near what is now Main Street. In 1760 John Armstrong moved to this area and established landowning powers which remain today as Armstrong Enterprises Limited (AEL). A tavern called The White Horse was founded by George Washington in 1764 for military purposes only and closed down soon after. In 1800 Joseph Ivey set up an inn with 126 acres where he currently operates The Old Post Office Museum (formerly known as The Ivey House) as his residence and business center today. In 1820, two other towns were merged into Phoenixville – Westphalia to the east and Easton to the west – following enactment of legislation by then-Governor Morris Jones that created Butler County.
