Phoenixville is a small town in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, located on the east side of the Delaware River. The population was 3,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown–Bethlehem–Easton–Westmoreland, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first coffeehouses were established in 1786 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his partners as "Le Petit Bourgeois" in downtown Philadelphia. They served coffee until 1800 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte moved to Phoenixville and opened "La Fayette" on Second Street near Bethlehem Railroad tracks. In 1802, John Dupleix and Pierre Joly opened "Joli Bouillon" and soon after "Fenway Coffee House". In 1814, James Kapp organized a group ofaversaries who bought out Nicolas-Jacques Conte's interest in La Fayette Coffee House and started the present day company that still operates as Kapp's Coffee & Tea Company (KCTC). By 1830, all but one of Kapp's shops had been closed by competition from Intelligentsia CoffeeHouse (ICH) which had been founded by Elijah Muhammad six years earlier. By 1840, only two stores remained active: Intelligentsia CoffeeHouse on Third Street between Market and Chestnut Streets and Mr. Weldon’s grocery store on Main Street between High School and Grange Roads. With business being so slow due to technological advances such as refrigeration or mail order for food items, several businessmen pooled their money to open a new coffeehouse called The Starbuck’s Cafeteria at 6th Avenue South in 1845 which became known colloquially as “The Starbuck’s Place” because it was where merchants could purchase goods before selling them along Second Avenue South against increased prices resulting from improved transportation facilities connecting Philadelphia with Phoenixville during this time period known as The Steam Age or American Gilded Age.

The first coffee shop in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania was founded in 1805 by Nicholas Biddle. The business was established on Court Street in the town ofPhoenixville. It was known as the Dutch Coffee House and served coffee to residents of Phoenixville, Delaware and surrounding areas. In 1828, John Smeaton opened a second store called the Old Dutch Store on Market Street in Phoenixville. This store became known for its excellent roasted coffee beans and also sold refreshments such as milk, eggs, breads and pastries. In 1842, Isaac Goodloe purchased the Dutch Coffee House from Nicholas Biddle and renamed it The Goodloe Coffee House. This store continued to serve excellent coffee until it closed in 1928. During this time period, many other businesses were located throughout Phoenixville including: The Valentine Bakery (1859-1929), Mr. Brown's Cigar Shop (1873-1929), The Wigglesworth Bakery (1895-1969), Mrs. Gorman's Grocery (1896-1970) and Mrs. Schaefer's Daughter's Tea Shop(1901-1976). There are now only a few remaining buildings from this time period including: The Goodloe CoffeeHouse building which is currently used as a storage facility; the Valentine Bakery building which is now occupied by a manufacturing company; Mr., Brown's Cigar Shop building which is now occupied by an appliance store; Mrs. Gorman's Grocery building which is now used as housing; and the Schaefer daughter’s tea shop building which is presently vacant

The village of Phoenixville was organized in 1892 and named for John C. Phoenix, an early settler who had come to the area in 1868 from Vermont. Phoenixville began as a small community in the township of Union, Pennsylvania on the southern edge of Philadelphia. It was developed around a mill and sawmill operated by Nicholas de Soto and his son John de Soto. The first post office was established in 1824, and the first store opened in 1827. In 1830, Phoenixville became part of the newly formed municipality of Union. The population of Phoenixville reached 2,500 by 1840. In 1851, Phoenixville merged with the neighboring town of Addison to form a new municipality, which lasted until 1857 when it merged with Mechanicsburg to form Mechanicsburg Township. In 1861, Phoenixville became an independent township once again when it amalgamated with adjoining townships to form Westmoreland Township; however, it reverted back to city status within two years. The first school in Phoenixville was built in 1827 and is still used today as Holy Cross School District #1's only secondary school for students grades 9-12; though there are several other schools within the district that may serve students up through 12th grade depending on demand from parents or businesses within the district.
