When the United States first began to form, it consisted of a very small number of people. The original thirteen colonies were only around three-quarters of an acre in size and not even close to being able to support a military. In 1775, however, when Jacob Riis founded the New York Volunteers Regiment, the American Revolution had already started. As America grew and more people joined the war effort, so too did the need for a militia to protect their citizens. In 1776, Congress passed an act that allocated $5 million dollars to be used for arming and disciplining the militias in each state. This money was soon followed by other Acts providing for other military needs such as supplies and troops. On July 16th of that year, General George Washington put together an army from men from New Jersey (the nation’s second most populous state), Delaware (of which Philadelphia was also a part), Maryland (a major slaveholding state), Virginia (the third most populous state), Connecticut (home to Yale University) and Rhode Island (owner of one of America’s first warships). The first force that Washington gathered together was only thirty soldiers strong; but within two months he had increased this number by assembling more recruits from different states. By September 1st of 1777, Washington had organized his army into five regiments: The 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment went on duty October 15th; The 2nd Maryland Regiment November 12th; The 1st Connecticut Regiment December 8th; And The 3rd Vermont regiment January 14th. On December 4th of that year, General Gates attacked some British soldiers at Germantown near Philadelphia while Washington was away on Christmas day with his forces nearby at Valley Forge Battlefield park. Reportedly over 50 British soldiers were killed or captured including several Generals including Cornwallis who retreated back towards Trenton because they knew they would not be able to hold out against such overwhelming odds against such small numbers of Americans. However public opinion quickly turned against Gates after this incident which is why no further action was taken against him until after George Washington’s death in 1801 when he was replaced by James Kieft who repealed all acts passed during George Washington’s time as president

The Philadelphia Volunteers were an American football team that played in the National Football League from 1876 to 1882. The team was formed in 1876 as a merger of two local college teams, the Delaware Valley Quakers and the Western Reserve Rebels. The first NFL game was played on November 12, 1876, against Rutgers at Recreation Field in Camden, New Jersey. The team finished 3-6-1 and were invited to join the newly created American Football Association (AFA). The next year they won their first professional game against Baltimore Colts. In 1880 they joined the new NFL as a charter member with a record of 8-3-1.
