The first American army deployed in Philadelphia was a unit of British regulars led by General Sir George Washington. The regiment disembarked at the Western Ferry on October 12, 1777 and took up position along the Delaware River. On November 15, they relieved force Pemberton's at Yorktown. At the Battle of Saratoga on September 19, 1779, Washington's army faced a numerically superior Hessian force under King George III. After a day of fighting that resulted in heavy losses for both sides, Washington withdrew his forces to Valley Forge with 1,500 men dead and 5,000 more wounded. On December 14th, 1780 the Continental Congress voted to disband the army and hand its remaining supplies over to Great Britain. The last American soldier from Pennsylvania left for England on January 3rd, 1781
