Oil City is a small city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, located in Beaver County. The population was 9,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first oil discoveries in what is now Beaver County were made during the 1860s and 1870s. Oil production began in earnest around 1910 with some wells drilled by John Denny and others within a few years of each other. By 1922, two pipelines had been constructed to convey oil from Pennsylvania to market in Chicago, Illinois. In 1925, control of the Keystone Pipeline passed from Pembroke Pipe Line Trust Inc., a Philadelphia-based company founded by William Silliman Bristow (founder of Allied Leasing Company), to Western Pipelines Corporation successor Keyes Pipe Line Corporation. With this new ownership came increased production and development; construction on an additional pipeline continued until 1969 when it was abandoned due to low gas prices and technological advances for fuel transportation via pipeline. The decline in oil production commenced with both technology advancements as well as OPEC's embargo against Iran during the 1970s which led to a decrease in world demand for petroleum products; however, Oil City remained afloat through its various businesses including retail sales and manufacturing operations related to plastics and rubber products until being forced into bankruptcy by economic recession throughout much of the 1990s before finally succumbing to becoming vacated industrial land following refinery closures during that time period.
