Oil City is a city in and the county seat of York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 27,827 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Pennsylvania and the largest city in York County by population. Oil City is also home to PA Power & Light Company (PPL), one of the nation's largest energy companies. The area that would become Oil City was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as part of what is now York County. The town of Pittston was founded on a bend in the Susquehanna River, about two miles from where oil had been discovered offshore near Cherry Hill. In 1839, when Pittsburgh became an incorporated town, it decided to move its courthouse and government buildings 2 miles away from Pittston so that Pittston could have its own railway station. Pittston Post Office opened on September 12, 1839. The name change came about because oil had been discovered nearby and people wanted their community to be called "Oil City." The first settler to live in what would become Oil City was John Fenton who built a log cabin on land he purchased along Park Avenue east of present day Main Street in 1853. By 1860, Fenton had several other dwellings as well as a wagon shop and sawmill operation. By 1870, his Log Pipe Works had turned into one of the biggest oil pipe manufacturers in America with over 1 million feet of pipe manufactured each year including for many years for British Petroleum Corporation (BP). In 1903 yards were built at 4th and Market Streets for production of heavy trucks used by pipeline builders during construction season; these yards remain today as part of PA Power & Light Co.'s main production facility located adjacent to I-680/PA Route 694 just east of downtown OilCity proper across from PPL's current Headquarters Building! Industrial growth continued through World War II with munitions plants started up all around Pittsburgh but especially at this time around Steelstown which became known as "the Arsenal" because it produced most all types of steel products needed for war effort – cars turrets tanks bridges etc... Steelstown eventually declined due largely to lack political will within Greater Pittsburgh overall towards manufacturing rebirth once again bypassing Steeltown altogether while major auto manufacturer Ford closed down operations there after World War II leaving numerous workers out OF ANY JOINING THEM IN WIDOWED MANUFACTURING BUT ALSO LOSING THEIR LOTTERY COMPETITION SHOULD THE AUTO INDUSTRY HAVE OUTgrown STEELSTOWN BY THEN
