The American Revolution in Pennsylvania was fought from 1777 to 1783. The army of General George Washington was a part of the British army and fought against the French and their allies, the Royalists. In 1778, the British Surgeon General wrote to his superiors in London requesting that men be sent over to help fight in Pennsylvania. After crossing the Delaware River at Trenton Junction he moved eastward until he reached Philadelphia on August 14th where he put down a brief but successful resistance by British forces commanded by Lieutenant-General Sir John Howe. On September 11th (the day after Yorktown) Washington disbanded his force and returned home without having achieved any major military successes or achieving political objectives such as taking Quebec or driving out the French from Canada

Oil City is a city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the county seat of Butler County. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Butler County after York and Allentown. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oil City were French fur traders in 1759; they named it Le Bienville because Jean Baptiste Bénigne de Varennes, Sieur de La Salle had been there on a trading mission some time earlier. In 1847, an oil well was drilled in that same year by George Wirtz near present-day downtown Oil City – this well became known as Wirtz Field – and soon production began which led to town growth. In 1872, John Drysdale bought land east ofOil City from John Prentice for $25 per acre ($ in current currency). Drysdale established himself as the founder and first mayor of Oil City with his home on Elm Street (now Market Square) as its core business district or "heart" district. He also built churches, schools and other businesses around his Elm Street property until he sold it to James Goudreau for $2 million in 1902. Goudreau renamed the street Ewing Avenue after his father-in-law Willis Ewing who helped lead United States Steel Corporation out of bankruptcy during World War I. On July 1, 1907, Oil City incorporation took place under charter from Butler County when many small towns wanted to try out new government forms following prohibitionist debates then raging across America; The vast majority (over ninety percent) of boroughs throughout Pennsylvania would not join any such organization due to their opposition to prohibitionism while Oil City did so unanimously becoming one large municipality with its own police force - something unheard of within most American municipalities at that time! On December 12th 1907 Mayor Drysdale died suddenly leaving control over all affairs including incorporation back to Borough President James Goudreau who appointed future Mayor Jock Mahoney until mayoral election day November 2nd 1908 when Mahoney was ousted by incumbent Al Smith 4–1 due to public outcry against corrupt government practices! This marked an important turning point for local politics as township governments quickly solidified into quasi-governmental entities throughout much of America during Grover Cleveland's presidency - an event which we can still see today articulated through referenda like that aforementioned regarding zoning changes or even term limits! In fact political power has increasingly shifted from Township level up throughTownship meetings back down once again through recent iterations like those aforementioned referendum votes! With turnover rates like this one can only imagine how complex current municipal governance truly becomes...much less remains unchanged since 1907!!!
