Norrisstown Township was established as a township on March 14th, 1812 under Order No 7884 from General quarters at Morristown Junction[1] - now Norristown - with boundaries unchanged since then save for minor adjustments necessary for changing Creek Indian Reservation boundaries.[2] At first called "Trenton Township", it changed its name on July 1st1838 to "Norrisborough Township" after President James Knyatt Norris who donated land for the village.[3][4] On November 4th 1892,[5] Jennings Borough amalgamated into Norristown borough when all municipalities within Military District 2 were merged into one district pursuant to Executive Order 9389[6]. On December 15th 1938,[7] following passage of Act 6 Of 1938 (Pamphlet P-1) ยง 3(a), all townships within Military District 2 were relieved from commonwealth jurisdiction and placed under local government control with powers vested therein except Jennings Borough which remained subject to Commonwealth jurisdiction until disbanded on January 1st 1959 due primarily to financial problems.[8][9][10][11][12] The last major change took place when Mercer County annexed much of what is now northeast Bucks County on April 10th 1960[13]. The Township boundaries did not change thereby keeping intact most if not all vestiges from prior township organization such as elections being held at least every four years instead of annually like other municipalities within MD2; township membership continuing through consolidation process; even though these remain inactive status pending resolution/approval by Board or higher level authority
