The Norristown area was first settled by English colonists in 1682 as a trading post on the east side of what is now Huntingdon County. In 1795, when it became part of Pennsylvania, Norristown was named for British general Sir William Norreys. Norristown has been home to three military installations: Fort Monmouth (1795), Fort Pitt (1814), and Casey Barracks (1910). The fortifications were disbanded in 1881 and all but one building demolished in 1903; only the War Memorial still stands today. In 1881, America's first electric streetcar system began operation from Norristown to Philadelphia via Reading and Bethlehem; service ended in 1951. The town started its own public works program which included the construction of several large schools, churches, civic buildings and a hospital after World War II brought an influx of soldiers and civilians with military families back into town. The history of Norristown began with settlers who arrived from England during the early 1700s. Many Englishmen wanted to escape religious persecution at home so they set out for new lands where they could live free from religious control. Some of these pioneers were farmers, while others started businesses such as clothier John Richardson Jr.'s store which served as both a social center and commercial center for early NorristOWN residents. In 1795, Quakers established their own community here known as "New Lebanon". This small town thrived until 1827 when disease caused by an outbreak of yellow fever ravaged America and many people died from it.onsequently, Quaker leaders decided that enough Was this village could handle without any more residents so they sent all but one family back home to London while they build up a new society there (the exception being two young men who stayed behind). This event led to what is now known as “The Great Migration” – thousands of British Protestants left their homes in search of opportunity and independence during those years leading up to American independence (1776-1783). Many NorristOWN families also made this journey; among them were Isaac Hilliard Sr., his wife Sarah Belle Islewicz (née Sell), their four children Thomas Jefferson Hilliard III (1802-1873), James Buchanan Hilliard (1805-1875), John Quincy Adams Hilliard (1807-1878) – all future United States Presidents – his wife Abigail Adams Lamarque (1901-1981)and her sister Bessie Barclay Lamarque Randolph Ketcham (born 1902). While some British immigrants settled permanently IN AMERICA while others traveled intermittently throughout North America for several years before eventually returning home again; most OF THE NORRISTOWN FAMILY MOVEMENT came within six months OF ENDING THEIR AMERICAN VISITATION! During THAT TIME warp we call “The Gilded Age” many Americans forgot about our forefathers who had gone BEFORE THEM & instead spent THEIR time consuming materials that would help make them wealthy beyond imagination! So much so that when MENTIONED OF THE NAME NORRISTOWN even some older folks may have forgotten ALL ABOUT IT! But back THEN SOMEONE NOT LIKELY TO BE CALLED JOHN QUIKIN ADAMS HILLARD WAS INTERESTED IN KNOWING MORE ABOUT HIS HERO’S GREAT grandfather!!! From then on EVERYONE WANTED TO TALK ABOUT HIM……….AND THEY DID! For generations Historians have loved telling stories about THAT DAY WHEN QUIKIN ADAMS HILLARD SHOWCASED HIS ABILITIES AS A WRITER…..WHEN HE WROTE A LETTER TO HIS FATHER praising him for being such an excellent student AND FOR PREPARING HIM FOR UNIVERSITIES WHERE HE WOULD STUDY LAW! BUT EVEN TODAY WE CAN STILL SEE HIS WORK FROM OUR OWN HOME & WE ARE INTERESTED IN READING IT AGAIN AS OUR CHILDREN ARE NOW DOING! In 1828Norrisstown became chartered as a borough under controlof Philadelphia County government pending incorporation intoPhiladelphia municipality later that year pursuant To act Of February 14th Announcing changes In Municipal Status Of Philadelphia County…that same year saw HARVEY WOODWARD come INTO NORRISTOWN AS AN INCORPORATED CITY UNDER MY SUPERVISION……..A MAN WHO HELP DESTROY ALL BUT ONE HOUSE IN NEW LEHIGH VALLEY DIVISION!!!!!!!!! As an incorporated city we enjoyed all typesOf privileges granted unto Cities By Laws Passed During My Administration INCLUDING: 2 PARKS - 1 ON PROPERTY OWNED BY CITY & 1 PUBLIC LOT LOCATED ON RIGHTS OF COMMERCIAL BUILDERS………..WE ALSO PURCHASED ALL SUCH GOODS NEEDED FOR REAL ESTABLISHMENT AS REQUIRED BY MUSTANG COUNTY CODE (& OTHER ORGANIZATIONS)……….SO MUCH FOR STATUS quo ante!!!!!!!!!!
