The first Europeans to visit Norristown were traders working for the French and Indian War effort in 1755–57. They named their new town "Norrisborough" after Sir John Norris, British general who had marched with General Forbes against Quebec in 1759. The town was incorporated as a borough on December 1, 1811, from portions of Huntingdon Township and Lebanon Township. On February 14, 1825, it became a full township under commonwealth jurisdiction with a population of 100,000+. In 1868 Norristown annexed smaller townships including West Chester (now part of Philadelphia), Hatfield (now part of Allentown), Easton (now part of Reading), Lansdale (now part of Scranton) and Doylestown (now part of Haverfordwest). In 1916 Norristown annexed parts of Radnor Township which formed what is now Upper Merion Township. In 1940 all but two properties within Lower Merion Township were annexed into Norristown while Upper Merion Township remained separate until 1984 when it was merged intoNorristown On July 1st 1897 the name change back to "Norrisborough". On November 15th 2009 it was announced that Borough Council would be disbanding effective December 31st due to budget cuts being made throughout Pennsylvanian governmentroups across all levels including local governments which are now required by state law to have an even split between district budgets however some council members will still continue to serve until January 1st 2020 leaving Norrishtown with just 5 councillors instead of 17 as originally planned
