It was founded by colonists from England on April 14, 1795 as part of Lancaster County. The town was named for John Norrington, a landowner and councillor in Lancaster County. In 1867, Norristown became part of the new United States municipality of Allentown. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Norristown were farmers who came overland from Yorkshire during the late 17th century. By 1800, many other families had also relocated to what is now Norristown and surrounding areas due to challenges with available land and hostile Native American tribes. The first school in what is now Norristown was established in 1801 by educator John Ireland. The town's first mayor was James Kieft (1768-1827). Norristown enjoyed rapid growth beginning around 1830 when coal mining began operations nearby and people flocked to work at local mines including those operated by Andrew Carnegie and John Drexel Sr.. At that time there were no public transportation options within the town so residents relied heavily on carts or wagons to get around. A number of mills were built along High Street between 1834 and 1840; these included one operated by Alexander McCormick which manufactured cotton goods for eastern markets. In 1860, construction began on what would become known as "The Town Hall" – one of the largest public buildings ever erected in America at that time. This structure served as both a courthouse and meeting hall until it burned down in 1906 following a fire that destroyed much of downtown Allentow
