New Kensington is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 8,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first coffee shop opened in New Kensington in 1868 by Dr. John Pemberton and his wife Sarah Kline Pemberton. By 1890, there were 10 businesses in the town with an average of 2 customers per day. In 1898, John Fenton purchased the business from Dr. Pemberton and began to sell coffee direct to consumers from a large tin can on Main Street. Fenton's success led to other small-batch coffee businesses opening up throughout the early 20th century including Harry's Coffee House (1910), The Dutchman (1915), Brownies & Beans (1920), and Dutch Bros.' Coffee Shop (1925). During World War II, many local businesses closed due to lack of production or rationing; however, The Dutchman reopened after the war as one of the first small-batch coffee shops in Philadelphia. In 1957, Donny & Marie's Coffee opened its doors as one of only two commercial coffeeshops remaining in New Kensington after closing down in 1951 due to health concerns raised by then- Mayor Kenneth Frazier Jr.. Donny & Marie continued operation until 1991 when they sold their business to Starbucks Corporation for $2 million cash and stock shares valued at over $100 million at that time! Today, New Kensington retains a strong cafe culture with several dozen restaurants and cafes open throughout the community serving up unique blends of roasted beans from around the world sourced through mail order or online orders from our roasters partners around North America and Europe!

The first coffee shop in New Kensington, Pennsylvania was the Coffee House on Market Street. It was opened in 1827 by Nicholas Treadwell and his brother-in-law Amos Alonzo Stroud. The Coffee House served coffee, tea, and hot chocolate until it burned down in 1878. The business reopened as the New Kensington Coffee House under the ownership of John C. Knopper from 1886 to 1888. In 1934, the New Kensington Coffee Shop moved to 6th and Market Streets and continued serving coffee until it closed in 1978.
