New Kensington is a borough in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 20,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia- Easton-Glenshine School District. New Kensington was first settled in 1785 by Scottish immigrants who built a sawmill on the Delaware River. In 1802, John Armstrong founded the town of Kensington on land that he bought from Nicholas Palliser. The name New Kensington honors General James Newkirk who fought against British forces in America during the American Revolution and later served as Mayor of Philadelphia. The community began to grow rapidly due to its location near transportation links and its close proximity to Huntingdon College (later Temple University). In 1875, New Kensington became an independent borough when it absorbed Huntingdon Township. In 1911, after years of deliberations and debate, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed a bill creating Borough Councils within municipalities with a population over 10,000 residents. As part of this change in governmental organization, New Kensington became one of only two communities in Philadelphia City government that did not immediately receive an elected councilmember representing them instead opting for an appointed position known as headship or headman which would allow one individual to lead all aspects of civic life including finance and administration; however this decision was reversed soon after when city officials realized how important this role would be for redevelopment growth around the new Broad Street Subway station

New Kensington was established in 1827 as part of the Washington Township subdivision of Philadelphia. It became an independent borough on March 1, 1922. The first settlers to the area were farmers and their families who arrived from southeastern Pennsylvania in 1776 during the American Revolution. By 1800, many more people had relocated to what is now New Kensington due to advances in transportation and trade that made it easier for goods and people to move around the continent. In 1827, Washington Township was divided into two parts - North Bethlehem Township and South Kensington Township - each of which would have its own representative on the township council. North Bethlehem’s namesake, George Washington (1732-1826), was one of America’s most important figures during its early years and his father worshipped here until his death in 1788. North Bethlehem became a thriving community with mills, churches and stores soon after Washington’s arrival; it remains one of Philadelphia’s most vibrant districts today. South Kensington fared much better; its residents were Reactionary Patriots who sided with Britain during the Revolutionary War while North Bethlehem supported America. As a result, South Kensington slowly lost ground to North Bethlehem throughout much of the 19th century despite being richer in natural resources like coal and lumber than its neighbour did. However, when railroads came along and began transporting goods further away from urban centers like Philadelphia, South Kensington saw an influx of new immigrants – many fromRussia – who helped revive its economy starting in the late 19th century onwards. In February 1922, following months of discussion between Borough Council memberships going back several years (and some contentious debate), New Kensington joinedPhiladelphia as an official borough within city limits without any vote by residents or referendum required. With this change come new challenges: since borough status granted greater autonomy over local decisions such as zoning laws and funding allocations for programs meant that New Kensington could pursue initiatives such as becoming a “ Arts District ” or even establish itself as its own municipal government within host city limits - both notions which had been anathema toPhiladelphia officials since before union day! But despite these challenges (and some initial skepticism about whether annexation would actually lead to increased tax revenues for New KensINGTON coffers), over time things started TOGETHER falling into place: businesses started opening up; infrastructure got built; services got added; cultural attractions popped up… everything you might hope for when tryingto create your very own little slice of Philly culture! And just like that – all those years ago – something truly unique happened here! In recent decades there has been significant redevelopment taking place all around town including transformation of key commercial corridors including Independence Avenue/ 11th Street SW & Market Street into vibrant arts districts anchored by world-renowned venues like The Living Room Theatre Company & Second Stage Theatre… all while keeping intact essential aspects of longstanding community life such as public square gatherings/ festivals/open houses etcetera! New Kensington was a small town located in the southcentral section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was laid out in 1784 by Nicholas Penn and consisted of about 200 homes. The population of New Kensington decreased from about 1,200 in 1800 to about 100 in 1810. In 1853, the town was merged with neighboring Kensington to form the new borough of Kensington-New Kensington. In 1898, the borough became part of the newly created city of Philadelphia.
