New Kensington is a borough in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. New Kensington is one of the oldest municipalities in Philadelphia and has beenone of its most vibrant neighborhoods for decades. It is bordered to the north by Southwark and to the east by Northampton Township. The first European settlers arrived in what is now New Kensington on September 3, 1781, when Captain John Smith landed there with his men after being lost at sea during the American Revolution. He named his new settlement after King George III of England because he found some English titles so interesting that he wanted to learn more about them. The early settlers were mostly Huguenots who had fled France during the French Revolution. They brought their own crops and built their own homes from logs taken from local forests. In 1812, two years after Pennsylvania became a state, New Kensington was incorporated as a township under the jurisdiction of Philadelphia County. In 1824 it was renamed Kensington Township again under Pittsburgh-based Commonwealth Provisional Government rule following America's victory in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After Allegheny County was created out of portions of several adjoining counties in 1853, Kensington Township became an independent entity within it until 1959 when it merged into neighboring Northampton Township along with other nearby townships to form what is now calledPhiladelphia city proper
