New Kensington is a borough in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, located in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. As of 2010, it had a population of 68,792. Located on the eastern border of Philadelphia, New Kensington is bordered by Kensington to the south and east, Wharton to the north, and Ardmore to the west. The borough was created from parts of neighboring Ardmore Township in 1856. The first settler in what became New Kensington was John Nicholson who arrived in 1795. He built his home on present-day Warwick Avenue across from where Armstrong’s Brewery now stands. Nicholson also purchased land at what is now Spring Garden Road and developed it into a small town with two stores and three homes. In 1806, John Fenton bought Nicholson’s land and founded the township of Ardmore which he named after himself. In 1851, Isaac Rapp sawed logs for an addition to his farmhouse that would become known as “Rapp’s Addition” today. The addition cost $2,500 and was funded by notes taken out by members of the community during its inaugural meeting on October 25th that year – one day before Independence Hall was dedicated! On November 3rd1851, New Kensington residents met again to adopt a new charter which set forth many civic duties such as providing firewood for local churches; maintaining roads; collecting taxes; establishing schools; electing officials including a sheriff; creating Borough Councilors who were to serve four-year terms renewable only once;and more!
