New Kensington, PA is the most significant coffee town in the United States. It has been called "the birthplace of espresso" and "the caffeine capital of the world." The town was founded in 1795 by John D'Angelo and his family, who ran a small grocery store. In 1828, New Kensington became the first American city to have a coffee house open to the public. The popularity of coffee began to grow in New Kensington, and by 1870 it had become one of the largest coffee shops in America. The towns residents were key players in the development of espresso. Angelo himself developed what would become known as "modern espresso," which uses a small amount of ground coffee that is blended with hot water and milk in order to create a smooth drinkable cup of coffee. In 1898, Italian immigrants Giovanni De Luca and Salvatore Ferragamo opened their own café on Second Avenue in New Kensington, which quickly became popular for its delicious espresso drinks. In 1915, when Italy entered World War I, many Italians moved to America looking for work opportunities. The Coffee House Owners League (COHL) was formed to help these refugees find employment and support their new families back home. COHL's goal was to provide access to quality roasts and oils from Europe for Americans living abroad so that they could enjoy great Italian-made espresso at home without havingto leave their homes or go out into society's hostile environment

The town began to grow rapidly thanks to the production of coffee and other goods from their brewery. In 1830, the town had two hotels and twenty-four stores. By 1840, the population had reached 1,500 people and the town had four public schools, three churches, a post office, two shops, one hotel and thirty-six homes. By 1850, the population had doubled to 2,000 people and New Kensington became an incorporated city with its own government. In 1865, New Kensington became part of Philadelphia after Pennsylvania seceded from the United States.

New Kensington was formed from portions of Kensington Township and Haverford Township on February 11, 1876. The first settler in what would become New Kensington was Nicholas Sargent who arrived in 1798. The community's nameakes attribute to its location near the then unincorporated town of Kensington on the right bank of the Delaware River - hence "New Kensington" - as it became one of the most developed areas of Philadelphia during this time. During World War II, many prominent Americans lived and worked in New Kensington including George Custer and Admiral John Jellicoe. In addition to its rich historical legacy, New Kensington is also home to some wonderful contemporary art galleries such as RISD Gallery and Sculpture Garden which are open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm and closed Sundays; as well as Independence Mall with its beautiful fountain plaza where people can enjoy free concerts throughout summer months

In 1606, Dutch traders founded a colony at Java and began trading with Indonesia for coffee. In 1621, the French established a colony at Madagascar and started trading with India for coffee. By 1800, more than 50 different countries had espresso machines as well as other types of brewing systems.
New Kensington was founded by the Potts brothers in 1796. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. New Kensington became a municipality in 1876 and was renamed Philadelphia in 1898. The population of New Kensington increased from about 6,000 in 1800 to over 40,000 by 1830 when it amalgamated with nearby West Chester to form the city of Philadelphia. In 1892, the United States Postal Service moved from its original location on Market Street to what is now Second Avenue between Chestnut and Walnut Streets. In 1901, the U.S. Post Office moved again to its current location on Broad Street between 11th and 12th Streets as part of a reorganization of postal service facilities throughout Pennsylvania.
