The Pennsylvania Army National Guard has been in existence since 1784. The unit was organized as the 3rd Regiment of Militia on November 16, 1784 at Johnstown. The regiment served in the French and Indian War from 1775 to 1783. It was mustered into service for the Continental Army on July 24,1775. On October 26,1776, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Regiment of Militia and served until it disbanded on December 30, 1786. In 1802, the regiment was reorganized as a battalion and it remained an infantry battalion until 1821 when it became a cavalry battalion under command of General George Washington. During World War I (1914-18), the battalion served with distinction in Belgium and France; after hostilities ceased, it returned to duty at Camp Butler near Philadelphia. After World War II (1946-1950), the battalion reverted back to its original name of 1st Regiment of Militia; however, it did not disband again until 1973 when it concurrently withered away due to lack of missions or soldiers available for activation (the regiment had no active duty assignments during that time). The unit currently is inactive but may be reactivated if all necessary approvals are obtained

New Kensington is a borough in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,846 at the 2010 census. New Kensington is one of the most ethnically diverse municipalities in Philadelphia and has a large Somali community. It is also home to Temple Emanuel Synagogue, which seats 4,000 people. The first settler in what is now New Kensington was Joshua Heninger who purchased land from John Quincey on January 12th 1786. In 1811 Samuel Riddle built a sawmill on the then current site of Penn's Landing. In 1828 Isaac Lyon bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km²) of land from James McNaught for $200 and erected a log cabin on it as his home. He operated this mill until he sold it to Abraham Goodrich in 1836 for $1,500 with interest paid every month. The earliest known occupant of what is now Goodrichtown was Nicholas Lewis who lived there between 1800-1801 when he acquired 2 lots near where present day North Sixth Street meets Market Street

New Kensington was founded in 1795 by Colonel John Forbes and his wife, Judith. The town was named for their birthplace, New Haven, Connecticut. The decline of heavy industry in the late 19th century led to declines in both population and economic activity throughout much of Western Pennsylvania; however, New Kensington preserved its identity as a cultural center while experiencing modest growth until recent years.
