The purpose of the Nanticoke Historical Association was to preserve and promote information about the history of Nanticoke Township and its residents. In 1951, the association became a member club with responsibility for maintaining archives and providing educational programs for members and visitors. In 1990, the association became an official museum with management responsibilities for all aspects of museum operations including admissions, visitor services, exhibitions, research, and education.
Nanticoke is a small town located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,558 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Borough School District. Nanticoke's ZIP code is 18014. The town was founded by Nicholas Kapp and his family in 1755 as a small farming community on the east side of the Susquehanna River near where it flows into the Delaware River. The Kapp family operated a gristmill that ground flour for local breadmaking and other purposes until 1825 when they retired from farming to sell their land and build a large house on what is now Main Street. In 1882, they donated land to Reading Borough which built a post office, store and schoolhouse on what is now Park Road. In 1898, they donation another tract of land to Reading Borough which named it "Kapp Township". In 1916, Nanticoke became an incorporated village with two stores, one blacksmith shop and one sawmill; however all businesses were closed by 1931 due to World War I-related shortages of materials. In 1951, Nanticoke again became an unincorporated village after being annexed by Reading Borough; however all business were closed during the 1950s due to civic concerns about possible pollution from manufacturing plants in nearby towns such as Allentown and Hazleton. The last resident died in October 2014 at age 93 years old; he had been living alone since moving out of his home in 1966 after developing Alzheimer's disease from natural causes (he did not smoke).
