The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to support the citizens of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. On December 15, 1941, the United States of America was founded. The American military had been in existence for over a decade and it was during this time that the United States Air Force was born. On December 15th, 1941, General George C. Marshall deployed the first American airmen to fight in World War II and these airmen were members of the 8th Bomb Wing at Wright-Patterson Field in Dayton, Ohio. The 8th Bomb Wing was one of the earliest wings activated within the Air Force and it flew Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers throughout World War II. In 1945, after World War II ended and Japan surrendered, General Marshall awarded Operation Overlord distinction to American forces by awarding them the Presidential Unit Citation for their participation in this battle. This citation is now known as The George C. Marshall Award and it is given to an individual or unit who has distinguished themselves conspicuously in action against an opposing force with great heroism or meritorious achievement
Nanticoke is a small town located in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,019 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Nanticoke is an agricultural community and has a few businesses such as a grocery store and post office. There are also several churches in the town. The main industry in the town is agriculture, with some production of apples and other fruit crops. Nanticoke was founded by German immigrants in 1781 as "New Ottumwa". The name was changed to Nanticoke in 1824 after it was moved from its original location on the Susquehanna River to present-day Armstrong County. In 1829, Nanticoke became part of what would become Pittsburgh when that city was created from parts of Armstrong and Lawrence counties. As part ofPittsburgh's core business district, it developed into one of the most important industrial cities in America during the 19th century. The modern incarnation of Nanticoke began to take shape during World War II when many local farmers were drafted into military service and produced munitions for Allied forces across Germany and Japan. After hostilities ended, many farming families returned to their homes but continued to produce wheat, cornmeal, potatoes and other agriculture products until recently; today much of this output goes towards supplying Penn State University's Agriculture Extension Service campus with fresh produce year-round

Nanticoke is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nanticoke was first settled by English colonists in 1682 as an agricultural colony called Nicolson's Ford. In 1795, it became part of the new Province of Pennsylvania under George Washington and was incorporated as a borough on October 14, 1802. It remained part of Butler County until 1952 when it became a part ofPhiladelphia Township.
