Murrysville was one of the first communities to be permanently stationed in Germany during World War II. The community was founded by General John S. Murry, Jr., who served as Commandant of the Pennsylvania National Guard from 1951-1957 and then as Commandant of the United States Army European Theater from 1957-1960. The military deployment has a long and proud history in Murrysville. The first German military deployment in Murrysville took place on July 15, 1944 when 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment (Light), 325th Infantry Division arrived at the town for training. At that time, only about 20 people lived in Murrysville and most were related to soldiers stationed there or living nearby. After the war, the community's population exploded with veterans returning home from Europe and those new to town coming from other parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio. business began growing quickly due to increased tourism opportunities available in postwar Germany. Murrysville is a small town in Pennsylvania that was founded in 1786. It is located on the Susquehanna River, about 20 miles west of Philadelphia. The population was 9,755 at the 2010 census. Murrysville is home to the University of Pennsylvania and its main campus, and also to two smaller campuses. In addition to its academic institutions, Murrysville has a variety of businesses and organizations which contribute to its economy. The name "Murrysville" derives from a Native American word meaning "place where there are many trees." The first settlers in what is now Murrysville were farmers who arrived in 1786 from Delaware County, New York. They named their new community after Colonel James Murrays, an early settler in the area. Myrusville's history began with construction of the Susquehanna Railroad in 1849-50. This railroad connected Philadelphia with Harrisburg anddale on the Susquehanna River. The townspeople built a wharf on the river for trade purposes and soon developed into a thriving agricultural center dependent on agriculture for revenue. In 1860, when America entered into the Civil War, most of Pennsylvania seceded from the Union; Murrysville remained within Confederate territory. As a result, most of the murals found throughout downtown were actually made by Confederate troops while they were stationed hereabouts; some remain even today! During World War II, much effort was expended by both local residents and military personnel to rebuild postwar areas destroyed bybombing raids during that conflict; thanks largely to donations received from locals such as Mr./Missus McMahon (now Mrs.) John Fenton (1927-2011), founder/director emeritus of Friends Committee on National Legislation - one of several important civic organizations active during that time period in rural communities across America (Fenton papers). Murrysville is a small town in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Murrysville is located on the Susquehanna River and has a ZIP code of 15818. It was founded by Hugh Murry in 1788. The first settlers in what is now Murrysville were Andrew and John Clements who arrived in 1792. They were followed by Isaac Norris in 1800 and James Withers in 1802. These pioneers built a log cabin which still stands today (Clement's Cabin). The first store opened here on the corner of Tenth and Market Streets in 1809. In 1814, David Borden became the first mayor of Susquehanna County after being elected from this town as part of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. He served two terms before he resigned to become Treasurer for Erie County. In 1836, John Burt purchased 640 acres (2 km²) near present-day Murrysville from Hugh Murry for $10 per acre ($1 per km²). This land had been donated by Burt to form what is now known as the "Murrysville National Wildlife Refuge." At that time it was one of only a few national wildlife refuges remaining on an area larger than modern-day Pennsylvania! Burt named his new property "Murrysville" after his father-in-law's home country of Ireland – also called "Murphy". He also used this name for other properties he acquired during his lifetime including: "The Murphy Farm", "The Murphy House", and "The Murphy Estate". Burt died suddenly while still living at Murphy Villa on November 5, 1942 and was buried there with full military honors beside his son Maurice along with all their belongings including some 125 guns which had been taken from Fort Knox when Burt took office as President Roosevelt's Ambassador to Spain! The Allentown Morning Call reported that “the remains are interred just inside an old manor wall” close to where trains run into Allentown Station back then! It was not until 1966 that work began on restoring part or all of Burt's original estate; however, due to funding limitations within government funds most restoration work stopped during those years save for some minor repairs/maintenance tasks which have continued intermittently ever since!
