Murrysville was a small village in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located on the east border of the town of Scranton. The population was 1,955 at the 2010 census. The Village of Murrysville was organized on November 3, 1827. It became a borough on February 14, 1916. On January 1, 2007 it merged with the neighboring community of Wilkes-Barre to form the new city of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Murrysville was named for John Murry who had come to America in 1795 and land grant in that year to Colonel James Butler. By 1800 he had built a home there which he named "Murrysville". In 1825 John Hennepin transported overland from Holland via Scranton his wagonload of potatoes which he landed at this place (now known as Potato Point). There were also several other farmers living here at that time including Captain Moses Brown and Samuel Lippincott (the first post office), all of whom remain long forgotten except for Captain Moses Brown's daughter who married George Wirtz and moved back to her father's farm near present-day Wooster Square where she still lives today. In 1828 John Miller came overland from Scotland and established himself hereabouts as an artist and musician; painting portraits and playing harpsichord or pipe organ music throughout much of Lackawanna County. He entertained many visitors here including General Lafayette when he visited Scranton in late summer 1829 during his tour through Western Pennsylvania on his way to Harrisburg for the Constitutional Convention held there; subsequent visits by President Andrew Johnson were also accompanied by concerts given by Miller at his home which continue even today under various names: JH Concerts & Events Corporation - now Live Nation Entertainment Inc., Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Presents John Hennepin - now Carnegie Hall Productions LLC., The John Miller Homecoming Celebration - later simply called "John Hennepinfest." This period saw good times for both man and village as they experienced rapid growth due to entrepreneurs like David Hackett Fischer who founded what is now Center Township Schools District No. 2 in 1892; along with others like FurnitureCity Stores founder Amos Giles Welch whose store graced Main Street between Market Placeand Erie Avenue until it closed down around 1960 after more than 50 years in business; Morris Paper Merchants Association president Julius Rosenwald whose company manufactured paper products such as tissue boxes, envelopes etc.; local physician Dr Edward Kappeler created one of the most successful cycle barnyards ever developed when he opened what is now known as Kappeler’s Farm Store near where Interstate 81 crosses Route 5 southbound just east of Murrysville Road; Ewing’s Department Store Co-op member Harry Niedenthal ran a grocery store next door from 1922 until its sale to Anheuser Busch In 1987 until it closed down too following World War II damage caused by fire associated with bombings conducted against American troops stationed overseas by Germany's Nazi Party using their own citizens as soldiers according to official government documents now available online at http://www2a1t3c4r5g7i0d3o0fkvxwz02a1rq6d3l9u00/. Murrysville was founded in 1784 by Patrick Murphy and his family. The town became a center of industry during the early 1800s, with such businesses as a foundry, tannery, mill and gristmill. In 1824, Murrysville was incorporated as a borough. The population of Murrysville peaked at over 10,000 in the early 1880s but declined thereafter. By 1920, the population had decreased to about 2,500.
