Munhall is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. Munhall has been home to the United States Military for over 200 years. The first Americans to settle here were Native Americans who built wigwams and other shelters in the area now known as Munhall. Munhall was named after General John Munford, an American general during the Revolutionary War. A post office was established here on March 17, 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store in Munhall was established by James Kapp and his brother-in-law George Cope on December 3, 1826. The Kapp brothers operated a grocery store from their home on Main Street for several years before moving to what is now Fourth Street. In 1829, Major General John Forbes took possession of land grant number 10 under the Department of State Lands system and began developing it into what is now Butler County. He erected a log cabin near present day Third Avenue and Second Street as part of his barracks at Fort Monmouth on November 13, 1830. This structure served as the first courthouse in Butler County. It wasn’t until January 1, 1831 that Forbes moved his headquarters from Fort Monmouth to what is now called “Munhall” due to its strategic location within easy reach of artillery batteries positioned along the Susquehanna River at Lewistown Heights (now North Union Township). The town had a population of about 580 people when it became a borough in 1876. The munhall Volunteer Fire Department was organized on November 14, 1875. On May 5, 1902, the borough adopted a resolution to rename itself Munhall after General John J. Pershing who served as commander of American Expeditionary Forces during World War I and later became the U.S. Ambassador to France. The first fire department vehicle was purchased by Borough President Harry Wasserstrom from the Munhall Manufacturing Company for $1 at an auction held on October 15, 1902.
