Monroeville is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Monroeville is located on the Allegheny Plateau and lies south of the Ohio River. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Monroeville were Captain John Smith and his group of Englishmen who explored the region in 1669-1670. They named it "New Ireland". Colonel James Monro, an American Revolutionary War soldier from this area, purchased a tract of land east of Pittsburgh in 1792 for $5,000. He built a cabin there and called it "Monroe's Cabin". In 1812 he sold the property to Colonel John Armstrong for $10,000 dollars (). In 1814 Armstrong built a farmstead (now known as Armstrong Farm) on his new land which became one of Monroeville's most important residents during its early years. A post office was started here in 1815 and continued until 1847 when it was moved to nearby Hazleton because that county had no incorporated settlements at that time. The first store in Monroeville was opened by Wm. Hildebrandt on November 12, 1840 (). In 1851 Congress passed an act creating Butler County with its capital at Westville (). On January 1st, 1861, Goodrich Township took form from Conklin Township along with many other changes within Butler County due to annexation by Pittsburgh during the late 1800s/early 1900s following industrialization across much of Western Pennsylvania%. On July 15th 1908 local citizens approved incorporation into a borough - also known as Borough of Monroeville () - with headquarters located at 114 N 9th Street (now home to Stroudsburg University). Withdrawal from Duquesne City Council effective December 31st 1916 led to dissolution of Borough; all functions including budgeting were assumed by Borough Manager – Walter Jaffe (). The current name ("Borough" may be derived from Monroe Township), originates from this time period when monies generated by businesses within Borough were divided equally between Mayor/manager(s) and various city departments (police force etc.). On July 15th 1974 Pittston Area School District merged into annexed Butler Consolidated School District., bringing about final consolidation throughout all school districts within Butler County which ultimately occurred on August 2nd 1979 with creation of Homestead-Monroe Borough Schools except for those students living within their former communities which continue today as separate schoolswithin newly annexed municipalities (most notably Scranton & Wilkes-Barre). As one result of increasing suburbanization over time across western Pennsylvania industrial production shifted away from rural areas towards larger cities resulting in decline or elimination of smaller towns/villages throughout much eastern PA; however monies generated by businesses within these villages still remainedsplit between Mayor/manager(s) and various city departments (police force etc.) until 1975 when Pittston Area School District merged into annexed Butler Consolidated School District.. This final consolidation occurred largely due to increased suburbanization over time across western Pennsylvania industrial production wherein larger cities began occupying more rural areas resultant in decline or eliminationof smaller towns/villages throughout much eastern PA; however moniesgenerated by businesses within these villages still remained split between Mayor/manager(s)and various city departments (police force etc.) until 1975 when Pittston Area School District merged into annexeeXavier Consolidated School District.. Monroeville is located along the Monongahela River and has a courthouse on Second Street. Monroeville was founded by George Washington in 1758 as part of what is now called Westmoreland County. The first settler in Monroeville was James Monroe. In 1812, Andrew Jackson won the U.S. presidential election as a result of his victory over John Quincy Adams and moved to Monroeville to campaign for him. In 1827, Isaac Braddock built the first mill on the river in present-day Monroeville. The town became known as "The mills of the Monongahela" because it produced flour for local merchants and made goods available to export through its port at Pittsburgh's Point Breeze Canalirting much of North America during this period. In 1875, Abraham Lincoln visited Sunbury Heights (now part of Easton) while campaigning for president and stopped off at the home of Judge Augustus Willard in MonROEVILLE that day; this event helped start Willard's business across from Union Station which continues today as Penn Station Associates Incorporated with headquarters on 8th Street NW in downtown Washington D C . It also served as an important stopover point on President Abraham Lincoln's route between Harrisburg and Baltimore while he was traveling downstate during his November 16 visit to that state before departing for Richmond days later Amtrak service
