In 1837, when Lancaster County was created from Armstrong and Licking counties, Meadville became part of Lancaster. From 1830 until 1860, it was also the county seat of Armstrong County. In 1870, while still part of Lancaster County, it became one of thirty-six townships within Carbon Township in McKeesport Borough which had been organized under an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly on November 4th of that year. The borough status made Meadville an incorporated municipality on December 1st 1876 with its own government including a mayor and four council members. On January 1st 1984 it reverted back to being an unincorporated township with only civil services conducted through McKeesport Borough's police department

Meadville is a small town located in the state of Pennsylvania, United States. Meadville was founded in 1795 by James Meade, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Pennsylvania Assembly. The town was named for Elijah Mead, who had served as a judge and magistrate in York County, Pennsylvania. In 1810, Meadville became the seat of Cumberland County. The population of Meadville peaked at 1,500 in 1826 but declined to 500 by 1840. The lack of development during the 1830s and 1840s caused the population to decrease again until it peaked at 350 in 1850. However, this trend continued through the 1860s and 1870s until there was no growth reported until 1880 when there were only 100 residents living in Meadville. The first settler in Meadville was John Dickinson who arrived with his family from Maryland on March 3rd, 1795. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street near where Pinchbeckâs Tavern still stands today. John Dickinson was one of many early settlers who came to centralPennsylvania during the early 1800s when land prices were very low due to lack of available resources. Many pioneers found their way to centralPennsylvania during this time period because they could not find other opportunities to make a living such as farming or working on farms back home in England or Scotland. During these years there were no roads or railsroads so transportation wasn't much of an option which made moving around Central Pennsylvania easy and convenient for those who wanted to get hereabouts (John Dickinson). In 1807 Joseph Meade arrived from England with his wife Rebecca and three children after spending several years traveling throughout North America looking for land that would provide them with food and shelter (Rebecca Meade). After arriving at what is now Meadville he started building homesteads along what are now Spring Street and Delaware Avenue (Joseph Meade). Joseph Meade's descendants continue to live here today including Mayor Tom Day (Tom Day) In 1810 James Meade moved from York County, Pennsylvania into Cumberland County because he saw opportunity there for himself (James Meade). At that time Cumberland County consisted mostly of woodland areas with few homes being built beyond farmhouses (Cumberland County Courthouse Museum Archives). JamesMeade quickly established himself as a successful farmer within Cumberland County by developing crops such as corn, wheat, potatoes and tobacco into valuable cash crops that supported local businesses (Central Pennsylvanian History Museum Archives- JamesMeade Family Papers #1). By 1830 most farmers had switched to raising livestock which provided milk productsand meat for local markets While JamesMeale's success influenced many others over the next decade or so how did his success slowly fade away over time? One possible reason may be because during this time period society began changing rapidly while agriculture remained relatively unchanged which led some people within agricultural circles to begin thinking that farming couldn't be sustained forever especially given advances in technology Another factor that could have contributed towardsJamesMeale's gradual decline might have been because he didn't always share concerns about government policies which affected farmers more than non-farmers(Central Pennsylvanian History Museum Archives- JamesMeade Family Papers #2 ).
