The Mckeesport Volunteer Fire Department has been providing emergency services in the community since 1892. The department was formed as a response to the Panic of 1893, when prices for food and other essentials skyrocketed. In 1907, the volunteer fire department became an official part of the city government. In 1916, the volunteer fire department constructed its first station on Main Street. In 1947, the city passed a law establishing a Municipal Volunteer FireDepartment System with 11 stations throughout the city. In 1958, the city began providing ambulance service to residents of Mckeesport. In 1970, a new station was built on Market Street and in 1978, another on State Road 95W. The present day Volunteer Fire Department Station #2 was completed in 1984 and is used by both departments for training purposes as well as disaster preparedness drills.

Mckeesport is a small, historic town in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Mckeesport were farmers who arrived around 1795. They built their homes on piles of stones near the present-day town square. In 1802, John Prentice founded a tannery and married Esther Appleton in what is now theAppleton home district. A year later, he moved his tannery to what is now the corner of Third and Market Streets and became a self-employed cooperator in what would be called "the First Railroad Town." In 1823, John McKee purchased land east of present-day McKeesport from James Watt for $1,000 and began to build a gristmill that would serve as the nucleus of Mckeesport's early economy. He named it after his father-in-law (John Prentice's brother), James McKee Jr., who had helped him finance the construction of the canal that connected Buffalo and Pittsburgh. By 1830, McKeesports supported some 10 stores and 60 families with their produce and manufactured goods before becoming an agricultural center with three large mills – one run by David Weir (1827–1910) – that processed flour into breads; rice; apples; cheese; eggs; milk products; candles; carpets; saddles; wagon parts/frames etc.; final output being exported to Great Britain through Pittsburgh's port at Point Breeze (then known as Elizabethtown). In addition to manufacturing goods for export outside Pennsylvania during this time period, McKeesports also developed its own coal mine which produced black coal until 1870. During this time period too there was significant cultural & social change taking place within Mckeesport as well as within Erie County itself with two major events taking place: firstly when Presbyterian Reverend John Haggerty came to preach in 1828 & secondly when Andrew Carnegie came to visit in 1850 & made his biggest donation yet towards infrastructure projects within America including such things as educational institutions (including Alleghany College) & public worksprojects such as building railroads throughout Pennsylvania (& Western New York). By 1860 however things were starting to unravel for both McGhee’s mill & local resident David Weir who found himself constantly at odds with power companies over pricing decisions which led eventually to him losing control of his millyard whereupon prices decreased 50% resulting in widespread economic hardships among locals especially those working within McGhee’s mill while others experienced similar difficulties elsewhere throughout Erie County during this time period due largely to increasing transportation costs associated with expanding railroad lines across America & beyond!
