In 1916, during World War I, local farmers produced some two million bushels of corn that were turned into munitions for the war effort; this led to increased business for the Goudreau familyowned mill which still operates today. A new shopping center called anchored mall opened in 2002 just east of downtown Mckeesport across from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre International Airport; it has since been demolished and replaced by more suburban shopping malls statewide including Macy's and Sears inside Scranton/Wilkes-Barre International Airport itself! The former anchors are now occupied by JCPenney & Co.;highland Mills Inc.; Home Depot Inc.; Crate & Barrel Inc.; Menards Supercenter; Dunkin' Donuts Corp.; Sheetz Grocery Stores (); BP gas station ();[and] Bamberger's Craft Brewery (). While much development has occurred within these boundaries over time (e.g., high school building addition complete across railroad tracks), much remains unchanged or improved from its early years: a vibrant Main Street character still pervades all areas with historic storefronts remaining intact while other businesses have relocated or been absorbed into larger stores adjacent to Interstate 81/Upper Allentown Road (.7 mile north) – one reason why "the heart of [Mckeesport]" retains its traditional name even though most residents no longer live there!
